I am currently using VM2 as a catalogue for a carpet shop.
Is there any way to enable the site to allow customers to request free samples from the products available?

Yes you could change the wording in catalogue format "ask a Question to " order you free same here?
this is done in the extensions>> language manager>>overrides>new>> and do what I did
the example shows back and front end. 3 minute job

Thanks for the reply but I was hoping to configure it so that customers could request samples as they browsed that all went into a cart or something, then at the end they could check out with multiple sample requests in one basket.

There you can click on 'Add a free sample to my shopping bag' on each item you are interested in.
Can anyone tell me how to do something like this with VM2?
