Title: Parent and Child products acting weirdly
Post by: antonitus on May 08, 2012, 14:29:27 PM
I've set up a parent and child product, as I believe the child product takes on the characteristics of the parent product in terms of description, short description, SKU, etc.  However it doesn't seem to take on the characteristics of the weight and dimensions of the parent product, well as a whole, the entire 'Product Dimensions & Weight' section information.  Is this how it should react or could there be a bug?

Also I noticed in one of my child products, that every time I change the 'alias' name, it intermittently changes it to another alias name it so desires.  Once again is this normal or another bug?

Is there any precise documentation on this?

The alias must be unique, it is for SEO.

That the product dimension are not inherited seems to be a bug then. I must take a look.

Hi Milbo,

Yes the alias is unique for all products.  For example, I set a products alias to "hive-s" and all is ok for a short while, however after a certain time, for some bizarre reason, it changes it to some sort of date format alias, like this "hive2012-05-08-10-09-43".  So I'm not sure why this is happening.  It must be related to changes made throughout VM2 maybe and somehow it might be triggering a change, but indirectly of course. This is my logical theory.

Thanks for taking a look at the 'Product Dimensions & Weight' inherited characteristics.

I think I found the cause of this or should I say why the aliases and some other fields are resetting themselves.

I have one parent product and within that parent product, I have one child product, as normal.  Every time I edit data in the parent product, some of the fields in the child product get reset.  As far as I'm aware, the 'Alias' gets reset to a different automated alias name, 'Product Categories', 'Shopper Group', 'Tax' and 'Discount Type' fields disappear.  The rest of the fields in the child product seem to be ok.  It looks like, it has a problem dealing with the new multiple selection function, just my guess.  Also as explained above, some of the data from the child product do not take on the characteristics of the parent product.  Parent product data is untouched here, just a problem with the child products.
