Title: Troubleshoot & Fix High Server Load
Post by: jguthrie on June 09, 2011, 13:40:45 PM
My Virtuemart store with about 15000 products and about 1600 categories will often hang due to high Load.

I believe I have narrowed the problem down to the categories.

When I have a category menu module enabled it will eventually cause something to lock up the server where the CPU load just climbs and climbs and the server becomes unresponsive. As a result I am unable to enable any of the many Accordion Menus that I have purchased as all of them result in the above. The problem is not with the modules as they work succesfully on many other larger sites, the problem I believe has to do with a corruption or something like that in my categories.

I also have 3rd party php scripts that extract product and category data for import into 3rd party sites. It happens on occasion that these scripts will eventually cause something to lockup the server where the CPU load just climbs and climbs and the server becomes unresponsive. It is not consistant as it happens that they all run successfully and then randomly they will cause the above scenario. Again, I don't think the problem is with these php scripts as they are used as standard on many other online stores, the problem I believe is that fall over when accessing my category data.

I have also experimented with caching and I have also tried to tweak mysql and apache parameters. I may have done more harm than good in trying to tweak the mysql and apache setting - this will also need to be investigated.

What I need is:

A) Find out the cause of the problem
B) Implement a fix for the problem
C) Correctly configure mysql and apache paramaters for my site usage and environment

If you have experience in dealing with the above and you believe you are capable of solving then I am interested in hearing from you with a proposal.

Thanks,
John
