Square thumbnail (resize and then crop)

Hi,

I´m trying to create thumbs without streaching, fill or center and they must be represent the whole picture!!!
Please take a look in my links:

Do some body knows how can I show thumbs which fill the defined size, do not change proportions and get almost the picture?

The idea here is if the image is NOT square, take the smallest dimension and reduce the image to your desired size (ie 120x120) and then crop the larger dimension to your desired size and create your thumbnail image.  So, if you had an image that was 480x240, it would be reduced to 240x120 and then cropped to 120x120 - so you always have a perfectly filled square thumbnail image instead of resizing and filling the background to make your square thumbnail.
