Product Category filter not 'sticky'

When using Products admin and selecting a category, adding a product will reset the filter and go to the top level, instead of 'sticking' on the selected category.  Same is true when applying a filter to find specific items to cross-merchandise.  For example, when I enter a string to pull up a set of DVDs that are also individually available, when linking to the other DVDs in the series and saving back, the filter clears and I have to re-enter the search string.
