Hello,
Maybe a silly question but here goes... Two VM's on J!3.
1) VM 3.6.10, J 3.8.16 installed from Gavick quickstart -
category media URL: images/stories/virtuemart/category/
(similar to product media path)

1) VM 3.6.10, J 3.8.18 installed in sequence: Joomla than Vm than GK template  -
category media URL: images/virtuemart/category/
Because i dont know, is this "stories" folder : created by quickstart? J 3.8.18 doesnt need it?
Generally speaking, is the "stories" folder needed - for example for displaymediaThumb or other system function call? Coded somethere else?

There you see one of the potential problems with using a quickstart package.  You can manually move the VirtueMart image folder to images/virtuemart/ and adjust the media file path in VM config/templates

I must say more precisely that the quickstart installation was a few years ago not with current VM.
