Hi

When can we expect release of 3.6.12 version? is there any roadmap?

Thanks

jjk

There is no fixed release date, but if you have a test environment, you may use com_virtuemart.3.6.11.10289 and check if that one works for your site. Might be pretty close to a 3.6.12 version already.

I am not really qualified to answer that question, but let's say it like this.

Question 1: Soon was said in reliable places. What soon means is different from different people's perspective.

Question 2:
There is a non paper written road map in the developer's mind, I guess.
The problem with road maps is mostly that you can only see the road on the map but not the holes and stones on it. So sometimes the road is nice and smooth and you arrive early and sometimes the road is rough and you have to drive slow and you reach late.

So imagine having a fixed appointment at 6 pm and all of a sudden you have deep holes in the ground.
How do you feel more comfortable?
1. Rushing through the holes to make it in time?
2. Taking it slow and maybe even get out to remove a boulder from the road and arrive a little later?

1. Having a roadmap with a fixed date is like saying, I will be there at 6 pm. If you do not arrive people start calling you or texting on the phone. As a responsible driver you stop at the side of the road and do not call while riding, so it's getting even later.
2. Having a roadmap in mind and saying soon is like saying I'll be there in the evening. This might keep you from running into a boulder and trash your car to only arrive the next day in an old taxi at which point the party is over and all is lost.

Something less pictury now!
The best thing to find out about the actual release date of a new stable version is to test the odd numbered betas on a test environment of a live shop, here the 3.6.11 betas, and give feedback on any issues you might face. Or also, if you have not faced any issues. Be pictury about your tests though.
The more people test the faster things work out and the better the quality.

Stefan

Yes, that is probably true, can you give an example for one or more systems and summarize the advantages of that system that you feel are missing for VM?

Magento uses fixed quarterly release dates, because they need to fix at least 100 bugs each quarter.   ;D
The Joomla developers publish a roadmap. But according to the first published Joomla 4 roadmap we should have a stable J4 since 4th Quarter 2018.   :)

you dont need to say excat day, but you should be able to let users know what is plan for next year. What is future of virtuemart? Are there planed any new features? Do you plan to remove spagheti code? What do you plan to do?

jjk

You can easily see what's currently in the pipeline for the next stable release if you look into the VirtueMart Repository at http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/repository.
The next 'bigger' thing is work on J4 compatibility.

hmm no activity since 12.3 ?

A pause in repository updates means nothing. It usually means intensive testing is taking place and discussions about what, if any, code changes are necessary, or if a new feature can be introduced without causing problems elsewhere, such as in backwards capacity.  Or it's holiday time.....

Why the hurry for a "new" version, anyway?

I am sorry I dont know what it means, I was just searching for information.

For example here are information from competitor: https://build.prestashop.com/

I am with virtuemart for more then 10 years and I would like to stay with virtuemart, but it seems that other projects have much bigger progress.

Maybe information for users what is expected in new version and when new version will be realeased?

Here on forum you still have information about version 3.4.2... Why? I think it is confusing....

And what are these "changes" you are so desperate for?

Change doesn't always == progress

https://build.prestashop.com/ seems to be a weekly list of bug fixes etc.. where's the difference to http://virtuemart.net/news/list-all-blogs except at VM only stable releases are publicised?

As pointed out .. if u want to follow the day to day progress then use  the  Repository

Maybe VirtueMart should really start to put out new versions every three month or so.

I suggest to show some progress, the background color of the template should be changed every time to show there is progress going on.
Could be like the color of the season, so everyone is happy to update every three month.

You could argue they update for kind of nothing, but come on, it is a nice feeling to always be on top of the world and synchronized with the future.

Nonsense to tell someone to look into the Repository, all boring stuff in there like how speed got improved and how many bugs were smashed or all that database performance stuff talk. Who cares? Just make cool colors now and then.
Maybe put some teasers on Instagram for the new style, like a cut of a corner of the category page, and then a week later half a product view and then the full view. What a show that would be great. Image the day of the release, everyone would be having such a good time.

And even better for the developers, they can relax and instead of putting their head into code all the time, they just flip a switch every three month, use the color of the last years version. After three quarter versions noone will remember that the old color was there last year.

Good business model for sure.

Ok, maybe the real developement will be slowed down, but someone has to give panem et circenses.
Or maybe not.

I am really sorry my bad, virtuemart does everything the best (i can see that number of users rapidly increases day by day)
