I am trying to configure a couple items with out much success, so I am looking for help to see if these are possible.

1) Is it possible to create a search field (or does a module exist for VM?) that covers multiple fields, like a make, model, year & search for? Much like an automotive site where you can drill down to what type of after market piece you may want to purchase based on the search criteria you enter.

Example:
Make: Dodge
Mode: Ram 1500
Year: 2016

This would produce any parts available for this vehicle.

2) In regards to the same VirtueMart, is it possible to produce a secondary part number if a customer chooses one of the color available on that product?

Example:

The site offers running boards for a vehicle. If the product shows a nickel colored running part XXXN and the option to choose a black colored running board part number XXXB, If the customer chooses the XXXB running board, that is the part number that shows up in the order. I have set this up in creating an option in the product, but it doesn't show up in the invoice / receipt created correctly, which when picked by the person to ship the order may provide the wrong part number?

Any variation to either point would be great.

what are these?  Categories and sub cats?

there may be other possibilities if these aren't a cat structure

Yes they would be categories. Running Boards, Tool boxes etc.

Is module for sale or do you know of one like it to install and use?

In regards to the part number issue, Can you show me an example of the breakdown in parent / child? I believe this is how it is set up, but ultimately, for example I have a category of running boards, there are 6 different types. If I choose one, it may have two optional colors, nickel color is standard, stainless steel is optional and so is black. Should there be listed separately? or one product where you can pick one of these and the sku# reflects what product you picked.

In general I want to enhance the browsing and search. First I want to add to customs if they should be searchable. We plan atm to change extensions.virtuemart.net, to work with less categories and tags in dropdowns, stored as Strings. would be good to have some support here.

Only one advise. Think before choosing a solution.
I had a customer trying to do a shop (auto part) with all product using category trree > brand/serie/model/autopart. at end this give you more then 25000 categories.
This was not very slow in front end, but slow on edit in backend, because all 25000 categories was displayed in product, category list, some shipment plugin ...
So better way is to mix categories tree and customfield > filters else at a moment you need many mysql and memory resource. and need a very bigger server

Yes.. agree with Patrick.. if u go mad on cats you need the resources

we have ~ 3200 cats here:  https://www.4wdpartshop.com.au and the speed I think is perfectly acceptable even with the server being in Australia

Great advise on the categories. I will have 8-10 categories and about 1100 products at the most.

In regards to Child Variant, is this something in VM or do you have to purchase it separately? If you choose a Child Variant, does it completely override the parent product? Is this what you mean about - if u buy a membership for VM in the package you receive is the ajax loading of the variant.. ??

sorry, the product I showed (Astucci per calligrafia)  is a multi variant .. is standard VM
