Standard Shipping problem finding Total

Hi this is a long shot but hope someone can help. were still using vm 1.1. I'm in the standard shipping module and am having trouble rendering out the Subtotal. Everywhere else I can get it fine with something like $vars['total'] but for some strange reason INSIDE the validate function, the last 2 items in the array are stipped off, 1 of them being $total. I can get $vars['order_subtotal_withtax'] no problem, but the next value in the Array is $vars['total'] and this seems to be stripped out.

Can anybody help?
