Child products inheriting discount from parent

We are running VirtueMart 1.1.4 and unfortunately can't upgrade for the time being. I have searched high and low but not been able to find a solution to this one. If we have a parent product created with child products and there is a discount on the parent, any child products without their own discount inherit the discount of the parent. Is there a hack available to stop this happening so child products do not get discounted? We use the product list style for displaying child products.
