HI,

I am looking to upgrade VM1.1.9 to VM 2x  but was very annoyed that the original VM had so poor seo capabilities.

While people may argue its all about external links, I know that page titles, URLs and descrptions are a massive first start for onpage seo.

I cant beleive that the original VM ignored most of this. I had to use an seo mod to try and get descriptions etc, but that was very cumbersome, rather than just doing it direct to the page you are editing in the shop product.

What SEO does the new VM have and do you find it very user friendly?

Cheers Bruce

By using very outdated VM1 you not only don't try nice features of VM2 (SEO & Co), but also make your web shop insecure.

You keep posting this response. Do you know of the specific insecurties relating to Joomal 1.5.26 and Vm 1.1.9.
The likelihood is that the modules and plugins used on the old joomla versions will be insecure.
However you are as likely to be open to problems if you fail to manage your extensions in Joomla 2.5

Look at the VEL - http://vel.joomla.org/live-vel.html

And to the question -

QuoteWhile people may argue its all about external links, I know that page titles, URLs and descrptions are a massive first start for onpage seo.

VM2.0.24 SEO is pretty good and handles all the major aspects of configuration and relating to meta data and SEO friendly urls

Just set yourselves a Local test environment under xampp and load VM2.0.24 and Joomla to see what you can now achieve.  You should be happy!

While VM1.1.9 has so far no security issues, we must be wary when people use J1.5.26 as it is only secure if they have applied the patch released in August this year and have ensured that all addons are updated to secure versions. Unfortunately I have been involved in rescuing 8 hacked Joomla sites this year, none of them VM sites, six 1.5.26 sites due to not maintaining secure addons (in all cases JCE) one J2.5.9 site where the hacker access was though code hidden in a "free" Joomla template and one J1.5.26 site with the file upload hack for which the unofficial patch was issued. This last site was one hosted on by me where the only initial evidence of hacking was that the bandwidth went though the roof with 2Gb consumed overnight, which I noticed during my usual morning checks. The hacker had uploaded warez files which were also being downloaded by multiple users. All sites were recovered, updated and better protected with .htaccess but it does make me cautious about the sites I build and support.

J1.5 patch info: http://docs.joomla.org/Security_hotfixes_for_Joomla_EOL_versions

@Dog_Guy the native SEF in J2.5 and VM2+ is really good - and so easy to implement!

Thank you for the much more considered response than the stock "your site will be insecure if you dont upgrade"

Because Joomla makes things (relatively) simple for users, many are also painfully unaware of the requirements to secure their sites, even with the latest versions.

As a minimum, all users of VM and Joomla should be aware of this:-

http://docs.joomla.org/Security_Checklist

and check the:-

http://docs.joomla.org/Security

And watch this for extension problems:-

http://docs.joomla.org/Vulnerable_Extensions_List

My best advice after reading and adopting best practice for all of this is:-

1. Stay current for Joomla / VM
2. "Dont use a module/plugin unless you must have it for your business to work - and then make sure you get it from a reputable source with a good track record"
3. Keep the add on stuff up to date
4 Watch the skies! And your logs

What about 3rd parties (extensions and templates), also modifications (hacks) for VM1? As far as I have no idea how secure could be outdated and unsupported VM1 WITH its addons, I shouldn't tell somebody that forbidden version of VM is safe in general. My assumption is that 3rd party solutions for VM1 is not under the close look of VM shop owners currently. No popularity - no trust.

Third party plugins and templates should always be treated as open to poor coding, unless from very reputable organisations and even then, I would say that you should use as few as you can, no matter what version of joomla or vm you deploy.

If you are runing an e-commerce website you should have security as one of you first priorities, if this is "not under close look" then you may find yourself in trouble!
