Please Help Attribute Dropdown to Select Tabbed table??

I am trying to help someone sort out their Joomla site after the developer has gone awol, I am just stuck with a feature of Virtuemart 1.1.9 - on this page the drop down
attribute menu at the top - bronze gold silver - makes the tabbed table below move to the appropriate table, I have added the gold attribute but cannot get it to select select the gold tab below,
how has this been set up, I cannot see anything in the backend or find any information.
