Unpublished related items causing wrong child items to appear

Hello,

A customer of ours is running J2.5.14 along with VM 2.0.22b and they have a a large number of products all with related items (related items are all parent products) and with child variants.
If a related item is unpublished it becomes apparent that the child varient dropdown selection shows the child items for a different item, often either the child products of the parent item that has been unpublished or the child items of another related product assigned to that particular item.

For example:

Product A has 3 child items:
- Product A-1
- Product A-2
- Product A-3

Product A is also related to Product B, Product C and Product D (each related parent product also has 3 child items)
Product B is then unpublished for whatever reason and product A now shows as follows:

Product A has 3 child items
- Product C-1
- Product C-2
- Product C-3

To fix the issue is to remove Product B from the related items list - this is odd behaviour and for a large shop with 100s of products is very difficult to keep on top of.
Has anyone else experienced this bug? Or can anyone help?
