Shipping calculated at price per unit

I've searched as always for the answer to this but can't find it anywhere...


On one of my client's websites, the packaging is a flat rate but based upon units rather than weight, so for example:
Product A - Shipping cost £3.99
Product B - Shipping cost £3.99
Product C - Shipping cost £3.99
Total shipping cost for those three products upon checkout should be £11.97


Previously I have always done shipping to weight limits, so:
0-1KG - £9.99
1.01 - 2KG - £14.99
etc

I don't want to have to do this as it'll mean potentially hundreds of different shipping methods, I just want the shipping to be calculated by (3.99 x units).


Is there a way to do this at all?


I am using Joomla 2.5.7 with VM 2.0.14.

With my "Advanced Shipping by rules" plugins, you can easily make shipping depending on the article count of the order (assuming all articles are treated equally, i.e. each article has the same shipping cost):

The corresponding rule would be:
Name=Shipping per unit; Shipping=3*Articles

Of course, there are also other shipping plugins, like the "Shipping Pro", which lets you specify shipping cost per individual product:
