Category description not showing in top level categories

All my category descriptions show in subcategories, but the main level categories, there is no description showing.  Please help.  Operating on Joomla! 2.5.6 and Virtuemart 2.0.10

Anybody out there that can help - I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs to used nested categories with a description in each.
