Post Migration - Parent Child Problems

Hello All,
Hope someone can direct me to a solution. I completed a Joomla - VM migration from J1.0.15 - 1.7 - 2.5 VM 1.0 to 2.0.6. The migration went without problems. Had backup if there were problems. Images both from site and shop were moved properly and are working.

Problem is: All products that were Child product variations are now:

• no longer linked to parent
• do not belong to a category

What is the easiest way to add an exiting product "lost child" to another existing product without reentering all the data again, I have hundreds of products with dozens of variants. Plus how can I avoid the parent product from being purchasable without a child product being first clicked on.

I understand I must now add a "custom field" to a parent Product. Custom field is created.  I would simply like to know how to reattach a child to a parent.
