Generic child variant what is?

Hi

I am struggling to understand what the "Generic child variant" is and how t works?
I ve read some posts but i still don't get it.

I have created a "Generic child variant" custom field then go to the product to add it and i have a list with: Product name, alias,sku,length,width...

Does anyone knows how this work and what those options mean?
