Names of child products

Hello
Since I'm selling products in two different ways, physical shipment and download, I'm wondering wether it is really necessary to give every child an other name. That means, the parent product is for physical shipment, called "Parent", and the child (custom field type: generic child variant) is a download variant, called "Parent Download". Isn't there a way to keep the same name for the child, as it was in VM 1? Customers can then select between the two variants, "Physical Shipment" or "Download" (somethink like the "cart variant" custom field).
