Random Product module very slow with 8k products

VM2 & J1.7
My site has over 8,000 products and the Random Product module makes the page load very slow.   If I try the same site with only the sample products, and the module works fine and the page loads fast.  My VM1 site's random product module with the same products also works fine.   Perhaps it's a scalability issue.

Right now, for example on http://nflmerch.com/test/nfl/chicago-bears , I have the module's category filter on, so the page loads just fine and fast.  As do any of the category pages, due to the category filter.
However, if you navigate to any page that's NOT a category, it attempts to pull random products from all 8,000 and the page then loads very slow.   Try the search function or customer service page, for example.

I still have this problem with the latest version 2.0.1.e
It leads me to believe there is a scalability issue with VM2 that was not in VM1 !

1.  8,000 products and 16,000 images
2.  Worked well with VM1 !  (you can go the the root URL of my link to see my VM1 site working fast, on same server and sql server)
3.  Product module "Use Category Filter" set to ON
4.  Any category page, or product detail page, loads fine and fast.
5.  Any page NOT a category page or VM page loads very slow.  (Due to the fact the category filter doesn't apply on those pages)

Check my link and go to a link that is NOT a VM category page.  Such as "Order Tracking".   Since I have the Category Filter ON,  category pages are fast, but any page that is NOT a category like "Order Tracking" is very slow because then it is choosing for 8,000 products instead of just a couple hundred from the selected category

Hmmm, for me every page is quite fast (approximatly the typical 1 sec). But random module is deactivated.
