Is VM2 API still available in Virtuemart 3?

I've been searching for some time now, trying to determine if the VM2 API is available in Virtuemart 3, and am looking for a concrete answer.

A PHP 5.5 upgrade from our server host appears to have broken the (barely functioning) VMConnector extension, with VM 1.1.8, so I intend to use this as evidence to our client that an upgrade is very much required. VM2 API seems the most suitable replacement for VMConnector, so I just need to be sure this functionality will be available.

VM2 API is the API of the new vm core. The VM3 API is almost the same and we did not find the time yet to update it.
