Have 2 options, size and color, but when selecting they change on front end

Joomla 2.58 and latest vm from download package.

I am trying to understand the how the variants and options work. I have products added, Ive created 2 custom fields following the size and color examples in tutorials.
I add my first custom field is colors. I then add the second custom field which is backing. They both display properly on front end but when I try to select an item from the one variant it changes the second, and vice versa.
So in the attached example if i choose gold, then choose pin, it changes gold to silver or select. Like the custom field options are linked to each other.

One thing I noticed was that # are same for each custom field or variant.

Losing hair and sleep over this. Perhaps some one can point me in the right direction? I also tried seeking paid help through the job link in forum last night and continue to get a 502 bad gateway error.
