Order Confirmation Email Not Being Sent To Shopper

JOOMLA VERSION: 2.5.28
PHP VERSION:5.5.20
VIRTUEMART VERSION:2.6.14

Forgive my lack of expertise with Joomla and VirtueMart. I am a mobile app developer, and as part of an app project for a client we took on-board an overhaul of their existing e-Commerce site built on top of Joomla and VirtueMart.

We had everything functioning and working as intended, but when we've finally gone live with the site Shoppers are no longer receiving an email when an order has been paid for and is flagged as Confirmed.

In the Checkout settings and "Default Order Status to send email to shoppers" section we have Cancelled, Confirmed, Confirmed, Shipped and Refunded. This still doesn't generate the email when we've come back from the Payment Provider - which in this case is Secure Trading. The received order is changed to "Confirmed" in the VirtueMart Orders section so the state is successfully being changed when payment is received through Secure Trading. Curiously, if I add "Pending" to the "Default Order Status to send email to shoppers" an email IS received by the shopper before they go to payment. But the confirmation email never arrives.

Any assistance of advice possible would be great as we're kind of thrashing around in here and our developer is based remotely so can't be on hand right now.
