Old version of VM 2.0.1 running on Joomla 2.5.24
We need to get to VM 2.9.9 and then update to Joomla 3.3.3
Possible to just install VM 2.9.9 on top of existing or do we need to do this in steps?
Thanks.

jenkinhill

I would update in a few steps. eg from 2.0.1 to 2.0.12 and then to 2.0.21,  and then to 2.6.8b which is the current stable version.

The current RC version of VM3 is VM2.9.9a which does still have a small number of issues for some users, but this version is being used already on some live sites. At this point while still on Joomla 2.5.24 I'd sort out any VM template issues, as layouts are now used to work with the VM view templates, and you may have overrides that need updating.

Finally, migrate Joomla to 3.3.x and re-template the Joomla side, but first make sure that any third party plugins you use the VM are available in versions compatible with J3. Hopefully soon the stable VM3 will be released, subject to more people testing VM2.9.9a.

Thank you Kelvyn.. much appreciated. And now time for me to pony up the 50 Euros to become an associate and help pay for development. Will do so in minutes.

When I download from this site it only shows and gives me VM2.9.8a there is no option for VM2.9.9a?
Where do I download that version?

I actually found it here from one of your older posts
http://dev.virtuemart.net/projects/virtuemart/files

I couldnt find it because it is out of order or sequence.

I also noticed the latest version of VM2.6.8b is now 2.6.8c and it states below in the full package it is the latest "stable version" so I assume I should use the 2.6.8c and your post was made prior to the "c" version being available?

jenkinhill

2.6.6c was only released today and is the version that I would expect most users to require.

2.9 series is not out of sequence in the files page, as 2.9.0 was released before the series above it, 2.6.2 and so on. When VM3.0 is released it will be at the top.

2.9.9b will be available soon. It is on internal testing ATM or available from SVN.

Thanks for the clarification!
At what point should I upgrade to 2.9.9.
I have done a successful upgrade now to 2.6.8 on my joomla 2.5 site.
Should I upgrade it to 2.9.9. now on my 2.5 site or wait and upgrade it after upgrading my 2.5 site to 3.3.?

I guess the question here would be is 2.9.9. compatible with both Joomla 2.5. and 3.0?

GJC Web Design

The real question is do you want to go to joomla 3?

IMHO 2.6.8 series on Joomla 2.5 will be long term stable - why be an early adopter if you all ready have a stable site that does what u want?

If you go to J3 you need to source new templates and extensions  - so it depends how complex your site is

I have done a number of J3.3.3/VM2.9.9 sites , they are very stable but they were all very simple sites without manyy extensions

VM3 will be J2.5 compatible - I am waiting for the VM3 stable before I upgrade any of my 2.6.8 sites (and will probably keep them on J2.5)

Thanks GJC for the perspective and I agree with it for sure.
We have already decided to go to 3.0 and have done the migration and are currently working on the template upgrade.

The migration was handled in an excellent manner by the extension called Migrate Me Plus and I cant recommend this extension more.
I rarely do migrations by extensions and the ones I have tried have been cumbersome unreliable and end up causing more work than me doing it manually.
However Migrate Me Plus has changed my mind.

That being said I was really trying to ask at what point to I upgrade VM from 2.6.8 to 2.9.9. and do I do it on my Joomla 2.5 site or after on my Joomla 3.3 site?

Quote"I guess the question here would be is 2.9.9. compatible with both Joomla 2.5. and 3.0?"

it will be fully compatible with both

whether 3rd party plugins and extensions are depends on the developers of those extensions

It worked perfectly upgraded to 2.9.9 on my dev site thanks to jenkinhill suggestions on doing it one version at a time.

I wanted to know if I could install VM 2.9.9. directly on my Joomla 3.0 site and then import all of the products and categories and database table's from my original Joomla 2.5 site with VM 2.0.8 installed on it.
Or even the same 2.08. version on another 2.5 site I have on a dev server and import the data from my original site? Then upgrade it to VM 2.9.9?

AH

There are database table differences so depends what you mean by "importing"

I don't think that you could just import the tables to the new dbase using SQL unless they had already been converted to 2.9.9

First you should be using 2.6.10   http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=118683

The latest Release Candidate for VM3 is 2.9.9b which is compatible with Joomla 2.5 and 3.x  This is for testing purposes only, although some very experienced users already have built working sites with the RC and it is used on http://extensions.virtuemart.net/   If you did get some errors and issues please report them on the development & testing board, http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?board=136.0   Note that debug is usually turned on in testing versions to reveal any errors.

Aren't all versions of Joomla 2.5 no longer supported at the end of this year?  Sounds like we will all need to be on 3 very soon, right?

jenkinhill

J2.5 support will continue in an ad-hoc manner for security issues, in the same way that security patches were issued for Joomla 1.5, and Milbo has reported that the VirtueMart team will continue to support the Joomla2.5/VM packages for 2 years and possibly longer. So there is no immediate pressure to move to VM3/J3.x, although a lot of people will. The main issue with VM3 will be waiting for the third party developers to catch up, although no doubt many of them will not release J3.x versions of their plugins/extensions.
