Product listbox on top right not working

The list box (numerical) to set how many products are displayed is not working, even if you change it from the default (10) to show say, 30 products, the page reloads and reverts back to only 10 products.

I have changed the settings in config - templates, even tried removing all settings related to it and nothing works.

I switched off SEO in configuration settings, but then when I try use the listbox drop down it take me to a page with a "search keyword" and what ever keyword you put in, it simply displayes the word you typed - instead of just doing what it is supposed to, ie: show 30 products instead of the default 10.

Even if I change the default in backend config it ignores me.

I have version 2.0.24 of VM installed on Joomla 2.5.14

Thanks for any help or advice. If there is no way to fix this weird problem, is there a way to remove it entirely (but keep the pagination at the bottom - just remove the list box at the top right)?
