Pricing Configuration customization for check out

ok so I have been trying all the different combinations that works best for the front of the site but when adding an item into the cart the only thing that shows is the discount. No total no tax nothing else shows until the email comes with the details.

This is truly a very frustrating thing as I want to show pricing on the front that makes since.  If I click the boxes so that the pricing shows in the cart then the pricing on the front looks confusing. 

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Did you try without template overrides? Have you checked your backend options?
