Related products display seems buggy

In case a related product is disabled or not showing because the stocklevel is 0, it is not omited but there is displayed blank space instead.
How to check, whether a related product is displayed or not to avoid the blank space (see image attached)?

Yes maybe you are correct - I don't think I have seen too many people add so many related products and then as the products reached 0 stock the images looked as you have shown. What you really want is the images to correct themselves and move over. Actually that would be a great idea as a selling point.

Really you may not get a direct answer as this might be a bug and has to be corrected. Or even tested. Or should I say developed as a good selling point - "like hurry now before they all go" -  other similar ideas are in extensions like :

I just took a quick look to this product builder, but I don´t think it´s just what I need.

So, it have to be a bug and have to be solved   
The big problem is, as I can see, that you not only have to check the stock value for the related product, but also for its childs...
