Failing to install Virtuemart 2.0.6 on two separate sites

Hi,
I have viewed other posts on this site but cannot get an answer to what I am facing. I have tried to install Virtuemart 2.0.6 onto two Joomla 2.5.4 based Linux sites. I have tried various options:
1. Upload the package file (which I created as a zip file)
2. Using "install from directory" with the zip file saved into a tmp folder.

With both options, I ensured that I was trying to install the correct of the two zip files first.

I have had various attempts with varying error messages ranging from JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find Joomla XML setup file to
Failed loading XML file
/tmp/install_4f8ed4601609c/akeeba.xml
XML: failed to load external entity "/tmp/install_4f8ed4601609c/akeeba.xml"
JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find Joomla XML setup file
Path does not have a valid package.

This last error occurred when installing the zip file into a tmp folder.

I have even unistalled Joomla and totally deleted both websites and re-created them from scratch but still keep getting errors when installing Virtuemart.

A quick update to this. I've increased max execution time from 60 to 300 in my php.ini file in the root of my web site but still get this error:

JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find XML setup file
Path does not have a valid package.

It is really strange as the xml is in a folder directly underneath the zip file itself.
