My PHP version is 5.3.5 on both systems.
I do have a custom VM template, but when I disable the VM template the problems remain.

I have checked some similar problems in the forum, but no real solution. The problems seem to come and go, as in the case of the add to cart popup dialog, and they usually go away after a VM update.
And these problems are NEW to me, they did not happened on 2.0.6, they showed up after the upgrade.

Edit: I've made a clean instalation of Joomla! 2.5.6 and installed VM 2.0.8b, created a couple of categories and a couple of products and everything is working fine.

Edit 2: it's definitely my template that is messing up VM... Still could not found what it is, but when I change to one of the templates that come with Joomla! it works fine.

Any hint on how to debug this? Any "css/js event" that is not being correctly triggered?

What you describe is a situation we try to avoid with our documentation about that.

When you are in your BE then you have this are about updates in the left lower right corner of the virtuemart menu. There is a detailled explanation, we have thanks to Eugen even the screenshots of a differ http://virtuemart.net/index.php?option=com_content&id=41

I am quite sure we found everything. Check it closely, I am quite sure you will find what is lacking in your template
Should I fix your bug, please support the VirtueMart project and become a member

I think what Virtuemart really needs is Test-Driven-Development...
So many bugs in each version and unfinished classes (//Todo....-Comments) in a stable version..
My last two weeks consisted of tweaking Virtuemart to be at least as good as Version 1.

Well, criticism is easy, and you are welcome to contribute! Please share your tweaks 8-) But to be "as good as VM 1", it really depends on your point of view: without MCV and especially template override, and with a lot of hassle to maintain in the mid term, IMHO it is not good at all.

And seriously, there are many different eCommerce softwares out there, some of them more or less integrated with Joomla. Very few of them are licensed with GPL v2/3, and very few are free of charge. It really depends on the features request for the project and its budget.

Do you want to get involved in a test and community-driven team?
(I am not part of VM Dev team, and these are only my thoughts and inputs, the VM team is welcome to take them or not!)

Generally, I absolutely agree with you!
But the time I have spent fixing makes it everything else but not cheap ;) (and thats also the reason why I am/my customers are a little bit stressed right now)
Of course, I love the new MVC pattern - what I meant with "as good as VM1" is the fact that some things in my store do not work anymore.

Being part of the VM dev team would be great, but at the moment I have to fix that issues and this will propably take a while...

I have 2.0.8e....and am having the issues with not being able to add / edit addresses during checkout.  Can i download the b version and just install it over my current installation?  Will I lose my orders / customers?

I have some serious issues and my cart is not working at all any more but unfortunately I am not sure if the source is my latest VM2.08 update or maybe some other component as I realized this only after a week because our site is with low traffic and I did not run a complete testing sequence on all functionality until now when customers wrote they can't complete the checkout process.

Currently identified following problems:
- (One page) checkout was not allowing any Shipping and Payment selection (Just says something like "you do not qualify for...", what the hell does this mean??
- After disableing one page checkout I see that no States are loaded any more when a new user registers and thus the whole system can of course not go forward...

:-(
