Can I edit VirtueMart install.sql?

I want to add few tables and fields to the database, I've tried editing the install.sql file to insert the data I need but when I use the customized installation I've made, new changes won't apply. Can it be done? Am I doing something wrong?

You may read the manual about the tools section. The tableupdater can add new fields, but you should keep the sequence
