I am getting error trying to install vm3 to j3.3.6

Warning

Jinstaller:Install:Cannot find XML setup file

We are using PHP 5.3

what file are u trying to install ?  exact name (in other words have you unpacked the 2 files (comp & AIO)

Joomla normally unpacks them automatically

com_virtuemart.3.0.2_extract_first (1).zip this is the one im having an issue with.  The other file says to install this one first.

Did that and still getting same error with both files

I assume you did follow the procedure described here (the version numbers in the tutorial are not up to date): http://docs.virtuemart.net/tutorials/installation-migration-upgrade/80-installation-of-virtuemart-2.html

If that doesn't work, your maximum allowed file size or maximum allowed memory settings on the server are probably too low. Usually these can be set in the Server Control Panel (cpanel, etc.)
Another option is to ftp the two zip files to a tmp folder first and then use 'Install from directory' in Joomla extension manager.
