updating old site

Hi, I'm very new to this and hadn't heard of Joomla until this weekend. I'm trying to help someone who's cart isn't working on their site. They have Joomla version 1.5.23 and VirtueMart version 1.1.4. They already have a catalog in their VirtueMart "widget", so i want to make sure not to lose it.
Any help that someone can provide on how i should update his site? and if that update will get his cart working again? Would be GREATLY appreciated!!!!!

hmmm... first thing to do is back the site up

then on a copy of the site update both joomla (1st) (to 1.5.26)  and VM1.1 to the latest VM1.1 versions (VM1.1.9)

then see what happens -

and if that update will get his cart working again?

who can say?   this is no explanation->  who's cart isn't working on their site.

with old versions like this could easily be a hacked site etc

Thanks for the suggestion on where to start. i was completely lost!
So i don't have to update Joomla all the way to the 2.X version it is now?
And the site has a shopping/cart feature. It used to work at one point, but has long stopped. I saw they had VirtueMart installed and how outdated it was. That's why i was hoping in updating it, the cart would start working again.

personally I would want to know why it doesn't work on VM1.1 b4 worrying about MIGRATING (it is NOT an upgrade to VM2) to VM2 or 3 /Joomla 2.5 or 3

If it is broken/unknown/hacked/hasn't worked in ages perhaps a rebuild would be faster/easier
