Separate between business and private shoppers

Hi,

we are a company based in Portugal that sells electronic products worldwide. Right now we are configuring a VirtueMart shop to do this but we are having a (very common) problem: we need to separate business customers from private customers (to know whether we charge VAT or not). I've seen a few times the same solution online, which was assigning a shopper group named business/private in registration, which makes us change some code in some ps_*.php files that I don't have in my instalation. How do you solve this problems with VM2 and Joomla 2.5?
