How to exclude a category from the VM menu?

I've just started using VM2 after years of using VM1. What I want does not seem to be possible with the new VM. I want to place certain products in a category and show them on a page, but I don't want this category to show up in the VM menu. In VM1 I used a VM category module for this, but I couldn't find one for VM2. The only ones who have the possibility to exclude certain category, have a very different design that the normal VM menu.

Another option would be to unpublish the category, but link to it from the menu-item where I want the category to show up. This actually worked in a previous version of VM2, but now I've updated to the latest version unfortunately I get the message that the category I want to show is unpublished.

Does anyone know a good workaround for this? I wish VM2 was a little more flexible!
