preferred method of selling products with sizes

As the title says what is the preferred method of selling products with sizes such as tshirts?  What if those shirts had multiple colors?  Parent/child or custom fields?  I browsed through docs but didn't see a best practices section which might help.

Use whichever method you are happy with or best fits the store management - there is no "best practice". You can use child products for colours/customs for sizes, or two customs.
