Connecting images to products?

I have images in the images/stores/virtuemart/products folder and thumbnails in the resize folder.
The product images are named product.jpg and the thumbnail images are product_90x90.jpg

Does Virtuemart have a utility to connect the images to the items?
Does anyone have a script that will connect them?
I tried the 'Synchonize media to Virtuemart' tool but it didn't seem to do anything.

I have been researching how to connect the images to the products and it appears that the 'Synchonize media to Virtuemart' button is supposed to connect the images to the products.  Is that correct?
Is this broke in vm 2.12f?

Update: I am getting the following error when I execute 'Synchronize media to Virtuemart' -"Found prior migration process, resume migration maxScriptTime 47 maxMemoryLimit 242 "
It does not update anything.
Remedy anyone?

VM 2.12f  Joomla 2.5
