Hi,
I'm using VM2.0.8e. While adding a new product I don't get the role 'Downloadabl product File(to be sold). I can see only 2 roles, namely 'displayable' and 'downloadable'. What should I do?

You need to buy the "virtual good shipping" module to make downloadble items. The "downloadable" option you are toking about is just for images.

Is it so? But in the manual for older version, it talks about all downloadable items like ebook & so on. It is also said to be a part of the free version in the older releases. Is it dropped now?

Yes, in the 2.x version of vm it is a seperate piece...

I will be checking on other joomla ecommerce solutions then...

Rickyvt, if downloads are your primary product (or only product), then yes, you might want to check on an ecommerce extension that is specifically designed for virtual products.

I recently did a presentation at JoomlaDay Chicago 2012 comparing 10 different Joomla ecommerce extensions. (slides for my talk "Checkout Your Options for J!2.5 E-Commerce" are available in PDF here: http://polishedgeek.com/media/checkout-your-options-for-joomla-ecommerce-shopping-carts-j2.5-e-commerce.pdf).  Digistore is the commercial extension I recommend if you are selling all digital goods. If you want to stay with Virtuemart, I recently saw this new DigiToll extension recommended - http://www.digitollsoftware.com/#features . However, I cannot vouch for it myself as I have not evaluated a live copy yet.
