Product Price Entered by Customer on Product Flypage

I am setting up a website that sells Gift Cards and the idea is that the customer chooses the card they would like to buy and then enters the value of the card desired and then proceed to checkout. At checkout, the previous value entered should be the product price. Is this option available in VM2? Can someone guide me in the right direction?

I found this in the Wiki:

I set it up exactly as described but it is not working properly. For example, I made the price 1.00 and then entered "10.00" as my card value but when I added it to the cart, it showed up as $5.00. It's counting the number of characters and not the value I am entering. Is there a way to configure it to use the entered value as the product price?
