Customized user register/login for VM2 mailing list

Hello,
I was seeing if it would be possible to customize the current user registration/login page to turn it into more of a concise one with less fields.  But I would still want to have the original one as well when the user goes to purchase products.

My thought behind this would just be to copy and rename the files associated with this registration and point the new "mailing list" form to the renamed files.   The main ones would be - en-GB.com_virtuemart.ini and layout.css ... I'de like to hear your thoughts on this. As I wouldn't want to get into an impossible task.
