Suggestions for improving the de-DE language files are welcome. I didn't use them in practice yet, so some of my translations will be inappropriate... ;)
There was a thread suggesting a Google document together. I think this is a neat idea.
Personally, I think that managing suggestions for improving translations will be easier using transifex.net instead of google docs. I'll try to upload the complete german translation to transifex some time this week and then watch the results for a while.

However, I have a problem: when I try to install in via Joomla installation manager it gives me the following problem: XML-file is not found. I have Joomla 1.5 so may be this is a problem. I don't want to update it so I need to install language files via FTP. But language in your zip don't have a folders so I don't know which folders I shell use.
I would be very grateful if someone will tell me how to sort this problem out.
Joomla 1.5 uses a different xml file structure, but if you download the "de-DE_VirtueMart2-lang_v1.9.8G.zip" from the first post in this thread and unzip it first, it does have the file structure you need (just tested it). All you have to do is to grab the unzipped folders "administrator" and "language" and copy them over your already existing administrator and language folders (overwrite them) in your Joomla 1.5.23 root folder. The german language files will automatically end up in their correct folders.
Note that you will probably need to install the german Joomla translation files first and make them your default language in oder to see the german VM2 translation.

The thing that concerns me is a path to the folder. Normally, if you want to add a language for VM you have to copy language files to the folders in there. So I can't understand how can they be stored in the language folder for the main site which is not linked to VM language files?

The path you mentioned above is relevant in the VM1.1.x series only! VirtueMart2 uses the same language file (file type .ini) structure as Joomla and other third party Joomla extensions. The correct german language file paths for VirtueMart2 are
Backend language files: your-root/administrator/language/de-DE
Frontend language files: your-root/language/de-DE

Just to be shure that you don't mix up version numbers - are you looking for the latest update of the old VirtueMart version or the latest Release Candidate of the completely new version VirtueMart 2?
"1.1.9" is the latest old version (for Joomla 1.5.x only) and "2.0 - virtuemart1.9.8.RC2H_extract_first.zip" is the latest new version.

Thanks for the info. I can reproduce that. But when I enable system and language debug in Joomla, my impression is that this is a problem with VM2's recently revised code for html mails, not a missing language string. I didn't get this error last week when I made a few test orders.
In my german language installation I get:
Language string failed to load: invalid_address: j (first letter of username???)
and on my english language installation I also see:
Language string failed to load: smtp_error5.1.1 : Recipient address rejected: User unknown in virtual alias table??

Text mail (order confirmation) currently produces a "500 - Layout ,,mail_raw_footer" not found!" error on the screen, but the email actually is being sent.

With VM2 revision 4500 that "Language string failed to load: invalid_address" disappeared again. I suppose it's fixed in SVN

Just loaded the file admin virtuemart.ini from the SVN and it's corrupted - not UTF-8 saving, I suspect.

Just checked it and everything is ok with this file. Encoding is UTF-8 without BOM. But maybe you opened it with an editor that saved it in a different format. Please check your editor settings concerning encoding.

I tried to download this language-file, but it shows me only a indep.php to store. What ist getting wrong?
Are you working on a Mac? A few days ago there was somebody saying that his Mac Computer always stored the downloaded zip file as index.php, which of course is wrong.

OK, I tried it with Opera an it worked fine, I could download the file. But I worry why Firefox won't do that...
I have to correct myself. I didn't update to FF8 yet, because when it was made available last week, I thought I better wait a few days until the third party plugin developers had a chance to catch up with the new version. When I updated to FF7 imediately after its release, some of my developer tools didn't work for a few days.
...so maybe I should wait a little bit longer until they release a FF8 bug fix :-)

I use FireFox 8 and when I download the file I get a file that is named Index.php.
If I rename this to Index.zip I get a valid .zip file with the correct size and content.
I don´t know if any other browser give the correct name but they probably do.
You should be able to download it the way I did.

No, it was uploaded as a zip file and just checked it. It still is a zip file. However, you are the third person within the past few days whose browser has a problem with storing the file. I suppose it's a Firefox bug. So far all users who had this problem were using the new Firefox 8.
I just had no problem downloding and storing the zip file with Firefox 7. Yesterday there was somebody who finally used Opera to download the file, because his FF8 also wanted to store the file as index.php.

Note that the german language files are currently still for the 1.9.8K version, so changes in "M" and "N" versions are not yet included. Perhaps I find some time to update them later today.
(BTW - even though I translated it, I don't use the backend translation myself, so there are certainly a few lines which require changes. When I translated it, I sometimes just had to guess what the developers had in mind :-)
Should we list the missing strings further? In the backend submenus some additional strings are missing...
I will take care of that, but you might have to wait another two or three days for an update from me, because at present I have a lot of work with my normal business. (Christmas sales ...unfortunately still without a working VM2 shop :-)

zu allererst möchte ich mich für die tolle Übersetzungs-Arbeit ganz herzlich bedanken!
Da es sich hier um die deutsche Übersetzung handelt, kann ich bestimmt auch in deutsch posten und man nimmt mir das nicht übel ;-)
Ich habe noch eine Frage zum Bestellablauf und der daraus resultierenden Mail, die generiert wird.
Im alten Virtuemart konnte ich in unter: /components/com_virtuemart/themes/default/templates/order_emails/confirmation_email.tpl.php noch die Kontodaten und andere Informationen anhängen.
Dies finde ich unter VM 2.0 nicht mehr, da ich den Zusammenhang der deutschen Sprachdateien und der verschickten Mail nicht mehr nachvollziehen kann.
Kann mir einer bitte verraten wo ich das finden kann, bin für jede Hilfe dankbar!

War auch ein wenig verwirrt über die runtergelandene Datai. Die Datai wird als index.php angeboten!
Sie muss dann einfach in z. B. virtumart-german.zip umbenannt werden

Die Datei ist natürlich im zip Format. Die Ursache, das Firefox 8+ die Datei fälschlicherweise als index.php speichern will ist ein Konflikt zwischen Firefox 8+ und der SMF Forum Software.
