Title: New Products & Categories Menu - J! Style, Suffix, Itemid, SSL, Cat Start, Hide
Post by: Forrest on December 27, 2009, 16:06:47 pm
Hello VM fans,

Looking for XHTML ul, li, span menu output for VM Categories &/or Products?
Looking to be able to specify:
 Module Class Suffix?
 Menu ID Suffix?
 Menu Class Suffix?
 Product Class Suffix?
 Parent, Active, Current Suffixs?
 Store ID Override for Categories?
 Store ID Override for Products?
 Category Start?
 Level Start?
 Level Stop?
 Sort Categories by Order or Name?
 Hide Specific Category Items(s)?
 Show # of Sub Categories?
 Show # of Products in Category?
 Show Products in Menu?
 Categories or Products first?
 Sort Products by Name or SKU?
 Hide Specific Product Item(s)?
 Always Show Sub Items?
 Option to create a flyout menu like: http://www.staples.com/ (left menu)
 Option to add Main-level Category Images in Flyout
 Option to use Category / Product Images as Menu Items
 Leverage J1.5! JRoute for SEF?

This mod will create a regular Joomla style output and give you the ability to specify a specific category to display ONLY, or use it as a products menu! Lots of additional options...
(http://www.thewebdna.com/images/boxes/cat-menu.jpg)
Quote
Here's an example category set for virtuemart:
  • By Product
    • Watches
    • Shoes
      • Big Shoes
      • Small Shoes
    • Hats
  • By Application
    • Firemen
    • Police
      • Vests
      • Hats
    • Saftey

Quote
Maybe you just want to display the sub menu for "By Product" to create a menu like:
  • Watches
  • Shoes
    • Big Shoes
    • Small Shoes
  • Hats
You can do it with this mod easily. Specify the start cat id for "By Product" and a start level of 1.

Quote
If you wanted just:
  • Big Shoes
  • Small Shoes
You can do this by:
specifying the start cat id for "By Product" and a start level of 2
or
specifying the start cat id for "Shoes" and start level of 1

Quote
Or, with update 1.2, you can specify a STOP level as well, if you want:
  • By Product
    • Watches
    • Shoes
    • Hats
  • By Application
    • Firemen
    • Police
    • Saftey
In the above example, I do not ever want to show level 3, so I:
specify no start category id, which means it starts with master cats, and a start level of 1 and end level of 2, meaning it will show the first two levels (master and 1st sub).

You may chose to always display sub categories below specified start cat or not. You may add your suffixes; easily change the class & id call names for css if you do not wish to use the joomla defaults: (parent active current). You may even override Joomla Itemid for store. If you are having difficulties with using a Joomla menu as your VM menu then this is your solution!

You can see a demo here (non-flyout): http://www.ruggedradios.com/
This displays the ability to have 2 separate main category menu (by product) & (by application) of which sub & sub-sub of each main cats are displayed in two separate menus.

I added support to force, unforce, or ignore SSL for all cat links in the mod, like you would be able to in the regular Joomla menu params... This is beneficial when turning J! SEF on, which currently causes VM to ignore the "Generally Prevent Secure Connections" setting. And as a note, you when you are using HTTPS with VM and J SEF on, you should assign all your Joomla menu items to be NON-SSL (under ADVANCED for each J! menu item), if you do want to generally prevent secure connections.

Screenshot of module parameters for specific category menu:

(http://www.thewebdna.com/images/boxes/admin-cat-menu1.jpg)
(http://www.thewebdna.com/images/boxes/admin-cat-menu2.jpg)

This is what the Flyout can look like with just a little CSS adjustments.

This is styling and javascript. You would need to create css for your menu, apply the class suffixes via the module params, and find a script that would support the dropdown function.

If you don't need to separate your categories then look around the forums for an accordion menu, or something of those sorts. I've seen one or two.

Post by: Forrest on January 27, 2010, 21:44:59 pm
Looking at this example, you have a submenu item of "indoor tools" as cat_id "5", which you are specifying as your start category. So that is where your menu would start. The problem is, there are no subcategories of "indoor tools", so of course the menu outputs nothing.

In this example from your site, if you wanted to just show only the categorie under "Power Tools", you would have a start category id of "2", and a start level of "1".

Your menu would then list:
-> Outdoor Tools
-> Indoor Tools

These are the sub caetgories of cat id "2", Power Tools.

Hi Forest,

Thank you for the quick reply. I am not getting how this works. I tried your example 2  and Level 1 and that worked. What would I enter to only display bliddyspam Cricket Bats, bliddyspam Gloves and bliddyspam Batting Pads ?
Title: Re: New Categories Menu - Joomla Style + Suffix + ItemId, SSL Overides + Cat Start
Post by: Forrest on January 28, 2010, 18:50:08 pm
Create a category called "bliddyspam" or "bliddyspam Batting" and move those three categories you listed under the new category I suggested.

You would have something like:
->bliddyspam
    ->bliddyspam Gloves
    ->bliddyspam Pads

Now find the category id of "bliddyspam" (which probably would be 9 or 10 in ur case) and put that as your start category, with a start level of 1.

oh I think I am getting it - it has to work on sub categories.... So I cant have 3 Parent Categories there... It works on :

Parent
>sub
>sub

Thank You Forest I will go try that...

Just a note, it doesn't have to be subcategories. If you want to have it act just like a regular menu, don't fill in start cat or start level... It will just list off all your master cats like a regular joomla menu style

Hi Forrest,

One of the aspects I liked about the original VM mod_virtuemart_product_categories was that when you click on a parent category, it takes the user to a page with the category info while the sub-categories are then exposed in the menu for just that category.

I really *really* like the SSL features of your menu tho, so I'm wondering if there's any way to get it to behave the way I've just described?
Title: Re: New Categories Menu - Joomla Style + Suffix + ItemId, SSL Overides + Cat Sta
Post by: Forrest on February 08, 2010, 23:24:44 pm
As far as I know it should do that. I think I screwed up a little in naming the "always show subs". Make sure that is checked and see if it works.

I'm really sorry if this is in the wrong post - how do you add a searchable parameter to the product? For instance, I sell trophies, awards etc.. I have my main categories as Trophies > Resin Trophies -> product.. I want to create another menu: trophies -> soccer -> lists all
soccer trophies.. I see in your website you have 2 menus and they basically index the same products but with different chriteria

It's not a search param! Download my mod on the first post of this thread. Follow the directions!

Hi Forrest,

When I use that option it does what I would expect, given the name: it shows all sub categories all the time.

Thanks for your help.

As far as I know it should do that. I think I screwed up a little in naming the "always show subs". Make sure that is checked and see if it works.

Ah you know, I think I finally understood your first post. You were probably looking at my site (ruggedradios) and noticing when you clicked on a category with subs that it did not load that category... it only showed the sub cats dropdown. For the record, that is custom for that particular template. If sure you figured it out by playing with it, that it does shows the category page by clicking on, even with sub cats, and yes, if always show subs is checked, then the menu always shows subs. So the mod should be good for you yes?

Hello, I'm very interested in implementing your mod into my site but I've been at the installation part for a short while now and I keep coming up with the same error message:

ERROR: Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package.

I am running Virtuemart v1.1.0 and Joomla! v1.0.13. Could the older versions have something to do with my difficulties?

Thanks

Not likely if your 1.5.x.

Likely the problem is in your FTP config settings, or your CHMOD on the tmp folder. You can search the forum for this error and get answers.

The xml file is there, so when I get an error like this, normally above would be a problem for me. Search the forums! There is a lot of info on stuff like this.

Thanks for the quick response. For clarification, you said the problem would not be present if I'm using 1.5.x?

I double checked my permissions on the tmp folder and it's 777. I'll continue searching the forums.
Title: Re: New Categories Menu - Joomla Style + Suffix + ItemId, SSL Overides + Cat Start
Post by: Forrest on February 22, 2010, 22:39:03 pm
I'm saying that as long as you are using 1.5.x, the module should install fine. If it is not, then it's something with your settings.

Are other mods installing ok?

Post by: dplusg on February 22, 2010, 22:57:45 pm
Hmm... Ok. I see what you're saying. I haven't run into any other mod installation issues. I'll go over my settings once more.
Title: Re: New Categories Menu - Joomla Style + Suffix + ItemId, SSL Overides + Cat Start
Post by: Forrest on February 22, 2010, 23:36:35 pm
You can always try a more manual install as well.

1. Unpack mod.
2. Copy unpacked folder to tmp/ folder
3. Go to install page, but instead of browsing for package on your local machine, use the second option to specify a folder on host. Point it to unpacked mod folder in temp directory.

Post by: dplusg on February 23, 2010, 17:28:11 pm
Thanks for the advice. I attempted that and still ran into the error.

The problem is while it's compatible with the virtuemart version I'm using, it's made for Joomla 1.5; I'm using 1.0. Specifically, it's using the database (JFactory::getDBO) and routing (JRoute) components only available in Joomla 1.5.

So I'm going to have to create a patch for my installation settings.

Yes, this is only J1.5.x compatible, not 1.0.

Hi Forrest,

Good work your doing but I'm still struggling to get it to work like I want it on our testserver.

What I like the menu to do when I'm in the "hipbags category" is simply show:

Backpacks and hipbags
   * Backpacks
   * Hipbags
   * Accessories
Recumbent bags
Bicycle trailers
etc...

I have no idea how to do that. In my website it either shows everything or just the parents.

Sorry for my upfront questioning. You seem very keen on helping people and if you need my website url I can offcourse PM you. If you're to busy no problem. Although I'm in big trouble then...hihi

Hi.
i'm using this module and is very good i love it.. is just that i'm haveing some problems..

When you go to the link http://016240e.netsolhost.com/aztecjoomla09/sound-and-lighting-.html its working perfect but when you select a category it change the left menu for the one on party rentals.. why is doing that?

Thanks for your help in advance :-)
Title: Re: New Categories Menu - Joomla Style + Suffix + ItemId, SSL Overides + Cat Start
Post by: Forrest on March 03, 2010, 19:30:16 pm
Looks to me like a problem of menu ITEMIDS. To troubleshoot this, turn of your SEF for now, so you can see ITEMIDs in your URL. Likely you have the same ITEMID for PARTY RENTALS, and the way VM categories works, all cat links will have the same ITEMID as the master VM link in Joomla menu (the first link to VM created).

So normally, you would create a link called STORE in Joomla menu, which might get an itemid of 67 (for example), and all category links from there would use that itemid of 67, so the master link STORE would alway be "active" in the menu.

I am assuming your first link to VM was actually Party Rentals (or at least that is what VM is using as the master itemid), os all category links using my mod, or VM's default mod for that matter, will use the 1st/master itemid.

Unfortunately, my mod won't work the way you are trying to get it to work, because of this inherent problem in VM categories. HOWEVER, you could moduify my mod pretty easily to
1. Use it also as your Main Menu mod, in which it would work the way you want, by adding an XML option to LIMIT the category depth (like you can in Joomla menu systems).
2. Don't use my mod, and create all your sub-categories in Joomla. A very big time use :(.

The fact is, there is no easy solution unless you can hack my categories mod, which again, probably would be what I would do in this instance, as it would be far better in the long run when it comes to adding and removing categories and having the menus update automatically, rather than manually adding Joomla menu links each time.

If i change the party-rentals.html for sound-and-lighting-.html so the link is http://016240e.netsolhost.com/aztecjoomla09/sound-and-lighting-.html?page=shop.browse&category_id=149 it shows perfect.. but i do not know how to hack the code to use the page is on fot the links and no the one for default.

I'm sorry to say that it isn't really fixed.

you are probably getting a better understanding of how VM itemid works, but frankly, there is not a work-around.

You will see the problem arise in other categories where you have a sub-menu, and the sub menu items will ALL go to one itemid... likely "54" in your case.

Play with it some more, and you will see what I mean. But maybe, just maybe, you have stumbled upon something I am not thinking about.

NOTE FOR vkareh:

The latest update (v1.2) will work for your needs. Since your main menu is the master categories of your store, use my mod as your main menu as well.
Category Start Id = Leave it blank
Level start = 1
Level stop = 1

This will list of your master categories, without ever displaying the sub categories. Then keep your menus on the left using my mod as well. Make sure you apply your css settings in the module!

enjoy!

I update the files with the v1.2 but is doing the same. when you navigate on the categories it go back to show the defoult one..

If you would like to go in the admin area let me know and i can provide you with a login and pass (by email).

My idea is to just show the categorie and subcategories of the Master Categorie sellected. not all the store in all the pages. And have them display the sub categories as navigate on them.

Is posible for you to help me with that?

Are you asking if you can display X product links in the category menu?

Or are you asking if you can limit the number of products displayed on the category browse page when a category is clicked?

I need more information.

Than you for quick response.

I like that is possibel to display selected category-ids. What I meant was to display number of products in each category, ie:
Shoes (12)
Dresses (5)

This way customer would know if and how many products are available in any category before he/she clicks on.
bliddyspam (12)

If I may, I have a one more questions. How would I go about dropdown menu to choose from different categories and subcategories. (I think it is suckerfish). I would love to have a tabs at the top of the page. I am sure it can be done manually, but my question is if it could be done with category module. If this question does not belong here I apologize. I was searching through forum, but did not really find an answer. Thank you.

Thank you.

SWMenuPro have a menu system which supports listing VM categories and products in different styles and directions (horizontal and vertical menus supported) as well as normal Joomla menus. You can download the free version which has some restrictions but still gives you good amount of control, or pay $50 for the Pro version and get lots of templates (and the author will be updating the Pro version soon to support multi-column drop down menus and more transition effects). Check it out here:

[UPDATE] 03-09-2010 -> download v1.4 (a big step up in menu options)
  • Added support to easily change Parent, Active, Current Class/ID Suffix
  • Added support to hide a specific, or multiple specific category items
  • Added support to use as a products menu
  • Added support to hide product menu items in a specific category
  • Added support to hide a specific products, or multiple products in menu
  • Files modified: all mod files modified

I can't wait to give this module a try. If it works the way I'd like it to, it could quite possibly be the ultimate Product / Category menu module for VM. :D Thanks for all the awesome updates Forrest!

[edit]: I can confirm that it works amazingly well, especially the hiding of specific category and product by ID. Now I can build the category structure I always wanted to without fear of making the navigation messy and overwhelming for my customers. :)

There are now only two further requests which I would like to see to complete it for my purposes (and possibly others who see the potential in what I'm about to ask :P):

1) Would it be possible to assign two ItemIDs, one for categories and one for product pages? I ask for this so that I will have the ability to show certain modules on category pages alone and others on product pages alone. Currently forcing a single ItemID on all links generated by this menu module means I cannot control the modules that show on browse and flypages, and I have different modules for each.

2) At the moment, with products showing in the menu along with categories, the categories are listed first in the menu followed by products. While I understand the logic behind this, I would like the ability to sort the menu listings alphabetically, so I can expand the category that has subcats / products and still have the menu easily scannable in context to the other items in it. For example, this is what one menu on my site looks like (the items with > are categories with products, while the ones without are products):

Flower Pots >
Furniture >
Light Fittings >
Swimming Pool Furniture >
Ashtrays and Dustbins
Bird Baths
Moulded Animals
Moulded Columns
Picture Frame
Playground
Water Fountains

I would like to sort this particular menu like this:

Ashtrays and Dustbins
Bird Baths
Flower Pots >
Furniture >
Light Fittings >
Moulded Animals
Moulded Columns
Picture Frame
Playground
Swimming Pool Furniture >
Water Fountains

I don't want to do this for every menu, but I would like the ability when I do want to sort like this.

Other than that, Forrest is a STAR! :D

You can find how to use it in Module Manager > Add New Module.  For all those who like me were initially confused :)

Glad you figured it out. It installs like any module for Joomla, with parameters inside the module. Once installed, Joomla will automatically create 1 module in your module list, just unpublished, and typically in the "left" position. You can always create more duplicates of the mod.

First of all, I must say, the module is working well and almost as expected.

I found one issue, and I'm not able to see where the issue exist.

Is a ' is added in the category, it;s placed in the database as \'

The normal product tree is converting it correctly, buy the mod_vm_cat_menu_specific not.

In the attachment you can see what I mean. The top menu is the standard of VM the on below (much nicer) is for mod_vm_cat_menu_specific

Please help me solve this issue.

Hi Forrest
Great module! I spent hours trying to find something that would do this, so thanks for saving me my hair!

I have one minor issue where I view a product flypage, the menu collapses, meaning the visitor would have to start navigating through all menu options to get back to the level they were at before selecting to view a product.  Is there a way around this?

thanks

Well styling is just using your CSS! That is found in your template css sheet. If you don;t know css, I suggest you do some research on Google, as there are many good tutorials!

Dropdown can be achieved via css, but if you want a smooth dropdown, you would have to consider a js inclusion as well. Frankly, if CSS is not your strong point, you may unfortunately want to consider a pre-fab downdown menu instead of my menu mod, or make a post on Commercial Projects VM board.

Once again thanks for your Mods. They are great.
Thank for the advice. I will build it now with your mod and then may be invest into a custom mod or just get that css down and fix it my self.

One more question. I noticed before that you were using router.php for your store.
Have you found a breadcrumb fix. I really want to get that fixed. I looked everywhere, maybe you can point me in the right direction.

Thank you

Unfortunately, you need to heavily modify the output of my hack to achieve this.

Fortunately, I have this here.
1. Install this mod (if you have not already). Once installed, just copy these files (attached) into that folder.
modules/mod_vm_cat_menu_specific

This is not 100%, as it only supports 2 levels (as you see on rugged); Top and 1 sub, only categories. And it doesn't have a lot of other options I have added to the latest revs.

The reason for modification, is Yootheme dropdowns use separator as the top "links" with sub categories. This is why they are not linkable, only show dropdown when clicked.

ok, I used:

module class sfx of: "style-menu"
menu class sfx of: " menu-accordion"

It may be different depending on your YooTheme template. Liekwise, you will notice there is in fact a SPACE before in " menu accordion".

Where it normally says "parent" "parent active" "active" and "current". Even if you enter in " ", just define something. Thanks.

Hey you mention that sometimes old ids get used in breadcrumbs.  Or at least I think you do.  My problem is that my breadcrumbs are showing up as within a category.  It doesn't matter if they are actually in that category, or if I unpublish that category.  They still turn up.

Can your mod help solve this?  The menu works great but if I can get the breadcrumbs sorted too then thats a bonus :)  I tried to fiddle with the settings but couldn't really understand the category id/product id thing.  I tried publishing a new menu but I still didn't understand.

Any help you can provide would be invaluable.  Thanks again for your hard work and excellent product.
Title: Re: New Products & Categories Menu - J! Style, Suffix, Itemid, SSL, Cat Start, Hide
Post by: Forrest on March 23, 2010, 22:56:21 pm
Itemid's are Joomla based... it's irrelevant that you have published or unpublished your VM categories.

You have to create a master vm link.
http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=68382.0

The mod can help solve some issues around this, but you must understand how an Itemid is used with VM and Joomla.

I am not sure how to explain cat and prod ids any better than what I did. Maybe someone else can explain. Each product and category has an ID that VM assigns it on creation. You can see this id when you view products or categories in VM admin. Using these id's you can control what is output, starting categories, etc.

Thanks for your reply, I will keep going with this.  Your work here has been outstanding.  I have no doubt I will be back to ask further questions!  I think I understand the product/category id.  As such you create something new, it gives it an id for the sake of the database.  Sometimes Joomla! gets all confused when you delete an article and then create a new one, which sometimes gets assigned the same number as the old one, which then brings up the old article.  So I have had to in the past go into PHPmyadmin to change the actual article number to fix that problem.  So I do "sort of" understand them...

ok here's a new dilema.  I have some categories that have sub categories.  For example
Air Filters
> K & N
> Green Cotton
Brakes
> Disks
  >> Black Diamond
  >> EBC
>> Pads
  >>etc

I only want to show the brands.  Some are on level 2, and some are on level 3, they are all the bottom level.  Is there a way to do this?

Thank you.

I don't think so. You can try
Start level 2, Stop level 3, and then add the cat_id for disks in "Comma seperated Category Ids to Hide". But I think if you do that, it won't so the sub cats of disks. You'll have to try it tho.

Otherwise, you'd have to break it up into two menu mods, then use styling to have them look as one menu, which is possible.

Hey Forrest,

I was searching for a module that could use yootheme's accordion function and found yours.

Thing is just like gesci, I would like to make categories that have subcategories as separators (so the user isn't redirected to the category page when he clicks to open the accordion). I've downloaded the basic-version-for-YooTheme.zip but the menu doesn't show anything. Is there a problem with the code or something?

Thanks!

This is the exact code I'm using for Rugged. So I know you can get it to work. You might try specifying a Cat Id and start stop level. I can't remember if that was necessary, since this is before I released the first public rev.

adding to my posts above.
I have a site with INDOOR and OUTDOOR products.
My VM cat tree is like this:

Indoor
 - Tiles
     -->Granite
           -> several products
     -->Marble
     -->Limestone
 -Windowsills

When I set cat.start to "Indoor "
I get this error: before "tiles "

"Notice: Undefined variable: sort_category in C:\wamp\www\modules\mod_vm_cat_menu_specific\class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php on line 128        class="level1 item2 parent active current
Notice: Undefined variable: sort_category in C:\wamp\www\modules\mod_vm_cat_menu_specific\class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php on line 128"

When I set cat.start to "Tiles"
I see the sub cats under tiles and everything works fine.
Why dont I see the cat.start lvl?

Please help me ! I have been trying what this module is doing for days :)
Thx,
Peter

Fresher: after looking at your settings, you had a Category Start of "1". This is for a VM category ID #, of which you had no VM category ID of 1. Default is blank/nothing, or "0".

Works fine.

hi :)
i like this mod very much but i have some problems since i completed inserting all my categories in vm (about 1800 categories)
i installed v1.8 and today v1.9 but i have still the same problem, that is when i activate the mod, sometimes i cant see the whole menu but only some categories, sometimes i can see part of the menu and a "<li" after the last item. Anyway, i cant see the graphic in the page and loading any page is too too slow, even if it's a page as term of use.
Maybe is there a limit on the number of categories?
I have the same problem both on IE and Firefox and if i use firebug i can see a
"505 server error" and sometimes a "301 Moved permanently" error.
Can you help me plz?

thanks in advance :)

Have you tried the default products category module that comes with VM? Is it much faster?

As for <li issues. I can only assume you have some funny characters in your category or product names that is throwing off my menu mod. I may be best if you PM me your URL.

yes, the default is faster and with it the graphic is correct.
about funny characters i dont think so, else the menu would be interrupted always in the same point

minou:

I'm not seeing any <li issues.

As for slowness, everything on your site is super slow to me, but I don't notice a speed issue directly related to the mod. Again, everything is super slow for me here (server response, image loading, etc), so it's hard to tell. Are you still seeing slow performance?

The only issue I see is when I tell the menu to ALWAYS show all menu items (all 1800 cats) in which, best I can tell, the server times or ends execution out after about 550-600 categories.

My concern is your server. Not to say my mod couldn't be improved code wise for better speed, because I know it can be. I will work to improve that over the coming weeks. But overall, this should not make a huge difference on a decent server. In comparison, it takes longer for me to list the categories on the back-end (admin) side of your site.

That is my guess. Again, my mod can improve on speed, as I know I pass variables unnecessary, and I will work to change that. But again, overall this should not make a big difference. If you drop me a PM attachment with a sql dump of your category tables I can test it on one of my servers as well to verify.

This could be me missing something. but..........

Look at the attached category pic.

If I set start cat 14 it shows perfectly fine cat 14 and all subcats(6,12,11) but if I click a subcat it jumps back showing cat id# 8,2,1 again.
Am I missing something in the settings or is this a bug?

Well, the first thing to try is using your template classes. When you get a template, usually the template itself has a module class that can be applied so your menu will match the template layout/theme. Learn more about your Joomla template 1st.

[UPDATE] 04-04-2010 -> download v2.3

For those of you using FLYOUT... please note the flyout is absolute to your 1st parent block element that is styled as relative. You will want to a) style your Flyout relative to it, or wrap your mod in a relative div in your J! template. Make sure you apply a overflow:visible to this css, or your Flyout wont show!

bialabs, your Joomla Art template should have a menu class sfx to which you can apply to my menu! Research the template you are using!

Typically something like -menu or -green or-nav, something like that which you can enter into my mods "Module Class Suffix" and/or "Menu Class Suffix".

Otherwise, stying a menu via css is something I cannot walk you r through. There are many good menu css lessons available online.

In your initial description:
    * By Product
          o Watches
          o Shoes
                + Big Shoes
                + Small Shoes
          o Hats
    * By Application
          o Firemen
          o Police
                + Vests
                + Hats
          o Saftey

Can you do just by Product for example?  It is a parent category so to speak, I can make the children work but can't remove just one parent, is it possible?

I'm not totally following you uglyfashion.

This menu does not currently support showing a parent product, and then a subset of it's child products... if that is what you mean.

You might need to give me a better explanation. This menu mod is very flexible otherwise.

However, I've got one question:
Is it possible to make like this:
-Category1
---Subcat1
---Subcat2
---Subcat3
-Category2
And only when I click on Subcat1, to open its subcategories:
-Category1
---Subcat1
-----Subsubcat1
-----Subsubcat2
---Subcat2
---Subcat3
-Category2

Thank you!

Not natively, but with this it should work. What you want is to always have the first sub-level showing (expanded). But and sub levels below that only expanded upon click.

Find on lines 340 to 343 in class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php
Code: [Select]
if (($show_subs == "1") || ($use_flyout == "1") || ($get_isParentisAct == " ".$is_parent_active) || (($show_products == 1) &&
($get_isParentisAct ==
" ".$is_parent." ".$is_active))) {

and replace with
Code: [Select]
if (($show_subs == "1") || ($use_flyout == "1") || ($menu_out_level == "1") || ($get_isParentisAct == " ".$is_parent_active) ||
(($show_products == 1) && ($get_isParentisAct == " ".$is_parent." ".$is_active))) {

I think that will work.

Hey Forrest,

I've not had a chance to write a review yet, wanted to finish working with the module before I did, but I am enjoying using it immensely. I've not managed to get the v2.3 working, I overwrote my previous v1.8 version but I don't have access to any of the new parameters (flyout etc). But I'm sure that's something on my end, I'll work it out. :)

I do have a question regarding extending the menu's capabilities though. I have got some child products associated to a few main parent products, I'd like to organize these products this way instead of making a new category for them. I'm trying to figure out how to include child products in site searches, but assuming I can manage that, I am wondering if it would be difficult to have the module list all child products of a parent product? Similar to a category displaying sub-cats, would a main product be able to list child products?

If this isn't possible, then can we at the very least have the parent product indicated as active while looking at the child products, so customers don't lose their place in the hierarchy when browsing them? (I realize this might be difficult because I'd imagine that the active and current states are given to those entries in the list that match the product ID, and child products have their own, but perhaps you know something that I don't... :P)

Of course, if it's not possible, and I can't get child products to show up in search, then I'll have to reconsider making new categories for them, but I would like to be clear on what is possible. :)

I want to show cat 14 and below when I click "UTOMHUS"

On the first click it show the correct menu and then after next click it show left menu starting with cat 8 but correct sub product to the right.

Am I doing something wrong?

Also installed latest version of module.

Hi, firstly this is a great extension for VM, well done! I think it deserves it's own website and forum.

Secondly I can't get the flyout to work at all. I have sub categories with products in them and 'use flyout' is set to 'yes'. The site is still on my local server at the moment.

Post by: Forrest on April 12, 2010, 08:03:46 am
morktron:

The flyout div is set to "Absolute", so you should have a "Relative" set div preceding/encapsulation you mod, to which that Relative div is what you use to position the absolute div (menu flyout).

If you do have a relative div encapsulating the menu mod, then you may have an issue with your preceding div's being set to Overflow: hidden. In which case the overflow is blocking the flyout from showing.

If your not very fluent with CSS, this may not be the best option for you to use, at least while on your localhost, as I cannot help you.

I overwrote the files in an old copy of the site I was working on, that's why I didn't see it... :P I've over-written the files in the current latest version of the site, and now I'm using the latest version of the mod.

Good to hear that it will be possible to list child products, that'll be a help. I just wish, though, that I could find a way to search for child products. I understand what Mark Callaf was saying that child products should be considered a variant of a parent product, so the search should only bring up the parent products, but in some cases the child products are different models of the parent product, with their own attributes, and child products also give you the benefit of stock control, so customers should be able to see what different models are available within that parent product.

I'm really frustrated with the way VM works sometimes...

Hey Forest, me again.  Firstly I wonder if you realised how popular your product would become when you first wrote it?

Alas my pondering is followed by a question.

Here's the site: www.propermods.com

I have three parent categories.  Search by Product, Search by Brand, Search by Car make/model

I want to show two of these three.  The search by car make/model is far too many things so I'd rather it didn't expand, but simply showed the makes/models in the centre of the page next to the menu.  Initially I managed to get your mod to open the search by products menu, without showing the parent (woohoo), so I left that on it's own and made a new mod for the next menu.  That one works because it only has a few children within it.

However the other categories I do not really want to do it this way, I want to have another menu saying "other ways to search" and within that have everything except the first menu I have managed to create.  If I have the other two menu's in individual mods and expanded they are huge, and unsightly.  Hence if you click and the expand, that is fine, but initially they should be closed.  If I leave it alone in the first stage, they are all closed, which is fine, but if I could make this work with only the product menu open that would work, or if not by doing it via two/three mods could work too.

Can that work?

Maybe, depends on the css of the other menu. If it was a css for a Joomla menu, then yes.

There are many good css tutorials out there. I cannot explain css to you on this post. There would be a lot to learn. I can tell you this menu is extremely flexible with styling needs.

What version did you download? Make sure you have the latest one please. I do not know of any problem with installation, and it has been downloaded a lot now.

Hey Forrest,

As a feature request, do you think you could add a hook to the mod to display category and product thumb images within the <li> tags of each menu? You would make it an optional parameter, a toggle to show or hide category images and another for product images, and it would respect the "exclude categories / products" parameters, meaning it would only display images for those items which will display in the menu. It could open up more styling options and give the designer greater freedom to design navigation beyond just the standard horizontal or vertical lists of text links...

I'm clearly in an experimental mood. :P

You can just put that css into your Joomla template css file. There is a css that comes with my menu, but it's only for fly-out menu. Otherwise, the menu was designed to output a Joomla menu style, which then can be styled using your Joomla template.

  >>Shoes
    >>>Nike
    >>>Reebook
>Magazine
  >>Sport
    >>>Football
    >>>Basketball
  >>Games
    >>>XBOX

When I click on "product" I have :

>Magazine
>AAA

When I click on "Watches" I have :

>Product
  >>Watches
    >>>Ck
    >>>Swatch
    >>>Rolex

My goal is to have when I click on "product" :

>Product
  >>Watches
  >>Shoes

And when I click on "Watches"

>>Watches
  >>>Ck
  >>>Swatch
  >>>Rolex

I have no need to see the previous main category and the other main/sub categories, because I have another css Click-Trans menu on the left who take care of lvl1/2 category. The main objective, is very fast switching between the categories.

Best regards

I understand what you are looking to do. Natively, this is not supported. If you did not have a bunch of categories, you could use this mod in conjunction with Joomla's Metamod to accomplish this however.

Using metamod you can create if then statements based on category_id. Then based on category_id chose to show one of the several different category setups.

Essentially for each display possibly like you have above, you would have to set up a new menu mod to show that way (start id, level start, level stop). Again, based on category_id using Metamod, you can choose what menu mod to show. If you had a bunch of categories, this is probably not well worth your time.

I might be able to add this layout as an option instead of using above solution, but my question to you is... how would you expect the menu to react/display if someone was to click on >>>Ck (under watches)?

I have 200 categories :)

Here is my ultimate objective ^^ (in the pic attached bellow)

When A visitor click on ck, he will see the browse page, with all products of the Ck category. If he want to switch, he could click on "swatch" or "rolex" to see the products of these categories.

On the left col, he could switch to shoes, and then,

  >>Watches
    >>>Ck
    >>>Swatch
    >>>Rolex

Will be :

  >>Shoes
    >>>Nike
    >>>Reebook

I don't know if it's possible to do this with your hack... but I'm sure that's will be great :)

Well, it's almost easy. The issue I'd have to think about...

I can modify the menu so that the starting point of the menu is based of the current active category id. This works well until the last category (the deepest sub categories)... such as >>>Ck.

So if someone clicks on >Product... no big deal, then starting category_id is for "Products", and my menu would list the first sub menus of Products. Fine.

If someone clicks on >>Watches, no big deal either. The starting category would be watches, and the menu would list the sub menus of Watches.

However, in this case, if someone then clicked >>>Ck, based on the previous funtions, the menu should list of sub items of Ck. But there are none. I think you'd want to continue to list off the subs of the HIGHER parent menu item Watches still. In other words, the watches sub menu, and all sub-menu items of watches, would really be the same menu.

Hence not so simple. The function changes on the inner most sub items... hence having to figure how to detect that the last sub items must revert to the parent of the sub. Did you follow that? This is why I asked you what would happen if someone clicked on >>>Ck.

I'll have to think about this.

On my local website, when I click on ck, I have the list of product of ck category, and the menu looks likes this :

>Product
  >>Watches
    >>>Ck
    >>>Swatch
    >>>Rolex
  >>Shoes
>Magazine
>AAA
------------

Product 1 - price
Description

Product 2 - price
Description

Product 3 - price
Description

And I expect to have :

>>Watches
  >>>Ck
  >>>Swatch
  >>>Rolex
------------

Product 1 - price
Description

Product 2 - price
Description

Product 3 - price
Description

I've attached two pics. Sorry the title of my category are in french... so if you don't understand, I will try another exemple. My books are very specific and it's not easy to translate :)

In exemple 1 :

LIVRES = LVL1 / PRODUCTS

On the right you have the result when someone click on "livres"

In exemple 2 :

On the right you have the result when someone click on "Art divinatoire et magie" (lvl 2 / Watches) and on "numerologie" (lvl 3 / Ck)

So the menu should work as a click-trans menu.

I understand what you want, I'm just letting you know that the final sub level when active is different function wise than the other levels. So I'll have to put some thought into how to handle that.

As I understand... if someone clicks on Watches, you want my menu to show:

>>Watches
  >>>Ck
  >>>Swatch
  >>>Rolex

But if someone clicks on Ck (or Swatch or Rolex), you still want my menu to show

>>Watches
  >>>Ck
  >>>Swatch
  >>>Rolex

Correct?

@jehanon: Hmmm, the best way to handle that is with CSS. You'd need to set a width to the surrounding div of the module, then set each <li> element to 1/4 the full width, and a float of left.

My css help is limited here, as I would spend too much time on others css projects that only help them, not the greater whole. This is not a module adjustment in other words, but rather a styling issue. There are many good css tutorials online if you are not sure what to do with my suggestion. Good luck!

You can do that as well if you want to hack my mod. Check out
function listCategories

There is an $item = 1 at top of function... and this item increments each time a category item is listed. So you could add a statement right after that.
something like
$c = $d = "4";
if ($c%$d==0) {
  echo "<br />";
}

And down in same function where you see $item++; you want to add right below that
  $c++;

Something like that will give you the break very 4.
But this still will not eliminate the need for styling to get your widths right.

line 404 .... $category_description ....

$row->category_description is what you would use to call the description.

Hi!!!

I tried to use this module but I have the last 2 days a serious problem.
There is no way to have in the website the Menu Class suffix that I select in the backand for the module. In the first Parameter you select the Module Class Suffix and Menu ID Sfx e.t.c.

Only when I write Menu ID Sfx, the frontend understands it. In any "Class Suffix" for Menu, product and Module, frontend does not understand it and it uses the default.

I try to use the menu class suffix of yootheme at the left http://demo.yootheme.com/apr10/ .
and the website is http://designer.glimlag.gr/

What I do wrong????

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

The flyout is awesome. But due to my limited technical knowledge I couldn't get the whole thing to run right. I don't know if this is a css, xhtml or javascript problem, and here's the issue:

When I hover over the menu the submenu pops up, but it also pushes the rest of the menu titles down, as if the submenu has occupied the space between the menu being hovered on and the menu below it. I have tried limited the height of the whole menu, but it didn't work. It would be great if somebody could help out.

The website I am working on is www.123forkids.com and the menu is on the left.

Thanks.

Hello,

I'm loving this thank you so much! I do have one question;

When I'm viewing a category overview page everything is great.
However when I go to view the product detail the Itemid is switched.

In category overview my link reads;
"index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.browse&category_id=118&Itemid=54"

However visiting the product detail the Itemid switches out to;
"index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=19&category_id=118&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1"

How do I retain the Itemid so that the user will stay in said category?

Thanks!

You need to learn about the "master link" for virtuemart. You can find many articles I have written on this by searching for "master link" by user "forrest" (in the VM advanced search on this site).

Likewise, I would not play with the itemid overrides in the menu module settings until you understand how/what itemids are doing.

Hi,

Thanks so much! I read up on all the posts and followed the instructions. However I still have my products detail view showing up in the main store layout (i.e itemid=1)

I'm not sure if it will cause issues but my work around so far is to modify ps_session.php commenting out line 548:
"$Itemid = "&Itemid=" . ($tmp_Itemid ? $tmp_Itemid : $this->getShopItemid());"

So you know what your master itemid is... You do in fact have a Joomla link to the VM component?
Have you cleared you cache since?
Otherwise, I have not solution. Time and time again it seems to be this.

Hello,

Finally, I've made a menu with Metamod and your Hack (thanks for the advice !). That's work !

But there is a last problem.

After a click the see the product detail, the visitor is on the flypage, with the product detail.

On the top, he could see the menu (as you could see on the pic).

But if he click on next or previous product, the css effect of "sub-cat 1" will disapear. That is the problem : I want to keep this css effect as long as the visitor is on "Sub-cat 1".

Could you tell me which class I could use ?

I've created a template with artisteer, and I've created a style (art-xxxblock style) for the banner3 position where metamod is published

@pwoo:

You'd need to change the $menu_out_level initiation in class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php

Find:
(($use_flyout == "1") && ($menu_out_level == "2"))
Change to:
(($use_flyout == "1") && ($menu_out_level == "3"))

Find:
(($use_flyout == "1") && ($row_level == ($level_start + 1)))
Change to:
(($use_flyout == "1") && ($row_level == ($level_start + 2)))

Find:
(($use_flyout == "1") && ($col_row_num > "1") && ($menu_out_level == "2"))
Change to:
(($use_flyout == "1") && ($col_row_num > "1") && ($menu_out_level == "3"))

Find:
($use_flyout =="1") && ($menu_out_level == "1")
Change to:
($use_flyout =="1") && ($menu_out_level == "2")

Find:
(($use_flyout == "1") && ($menu_out_level >= "3"))
Change to:
(($use_flyout == "1") && ($menu_out_level >= "4"))

I think that will do it. All we did here is increase the levels by one, since the 1st sub-menu is still shown in the column.

Okay I just tried it but it didn't work.

So you are saying essentially for all the conditions that involves use flyout I have to increase the corresponding menuoutlevel by one right?

Right now if I disable use flyout and enable "always show the first set of sub items", the result will be only the top category is showing. i.e. the first set of sub items is not showing.

If I enable flyout and disable "always show the first set of sub items", the result will be showing the first set of sub items, but it is not flyout and the second set of sub items didn't show after all.

So it looks like right now the showing of the first set of sub items depends on whether I have enable "use flyout" or not.

p.s i tried to write a review but it seems that i couldn't find the link to that.

It appears to me that in version 2.5, when you enable "Show Products as Menu Items" in the Advanced Parameters, each Product link is missing its terminating </li> tag.  The link operates properly and the <li> looks proper, but it fails to pass as Valid HTML.  I believe the problem is in the file "class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php", in the function  "listProducts", around line 486.  I think this:
Code: [Select]
echo '</a>';should be changed to this:
Code: [Select]
echo '</a></li>';

I set parameter to show products as menu items and my products have numerical names eg: 1 room package, 2 room package, 3 room package etc all the way to 12. The problem occurring is that the sort order is jumbled when displayed on the page, showing as
1 room package
10 room package
11 room package
12 room package
2 room package
3 room package

I don't see any switches to change the order. How can I edit the module to display product list in proper numerical order?

It is ordering it in alpha order. To get around this, use your VM category ordering... and set the menu system to use that (default/stardarnd) ordering.

Forrest, to address kylebonham's issue, you'd have to add a new "Sort Products By" parameter called something like "Category Order" so that it would match the sequence seen in the back-end when filtering by Category.  Then you'd have to change the function "getProducts" (in class.vm_menu_specific.php), check for this new param, and if it's present, then modify your query by joining the table jos_vm_product_category_xref to get the field "product_list" and use that in the ORDER BY clause.

You could lift the code from product.product_list.  Here's the part of the WHERE clause that enables the query to get the field "product_list" from jos_vm_product_category_xref:
Code: [Select]
$q = "#__{vm}_product_category_xref.category_id='$category_id' ";
$q .= "AND #__{vm}_category.category_id=#__{vm}_product_category_xref.category_id ";
$q .= "AND #__{vm}_product.product_id=#__{vm}_product_category_xref.product_id ";

@ledstyle: Did you turn off the flyout? You'd need to use CSS to overcome this. You likely have an "overflow:hidden;" in a surrounding div around the menu mod. Also, you can try applying a "z-index:999;" or something like that to the flyout div.

thanks rb. It was an easy change... as the above code was already in the  function to retrieve products, I just didn't have that as an order by option. In fact, I had no idea that VM had an products order function! Completely oblivious... so I learned something today :)

@ledstyle: Did you turn off the flyout? You'd need to use CSS to overcome this. You likely have an "overflow:hidden;" in a surrounding div around the menu mod. Also, you can try applying a "z-index:999;" or something like that to the flyout div.

Well, that z-index didn't do anything. And there is already that Overflow in Flyout.css

Or what did you mean with this Overflow? Where exactly I add it?

And now that Flyout is ON.

@ledstyle. You want to make sure that "overflow:hidden;" is not in ANY of the surrounding divs css where the flyout may "overflow". You can remove the entries or change them to "overflow:visible;"

So I need to change CSS from Mod-Mainmenu and from browsepage? Where do I find those? I'm not hacker =)

Hello,

Could you tell me if it's possible to get the description on main parent category ?

-Books (lvl1)
 - Main theme 1 (lvl2)
  - Child theme 1 (lvl3)
  - Child theme 2 (lvl3)
  - Child theme 3 (lvl3)
 - Main theme 2 (lvl2)
 ...

I've started my category at lvl2, and I need to show the description of each lvl 2 category (not lvl 1 and lvl3)

By the way : your solution with metamod and your hack is perfect !

Sure it's possible. You just to add that in the "function getSubCategories" SELECT line. a.category_desc (I think its desc).

Then you can add the desc in the "function listCategories". (if it is cateogry_desc), then you can use "$row->category_desc" to get the desc. You will want to add a php statement to check what level you are on. Something like:

if {$menu_out_level == "1") {
$row->category_desc
}

Hi Forrest
I am using this module to try to display all products in their categories.
I have got the product image pulling through ok.
What I would like now is to get the $form_addtocart functionality foe each product listed to work. Can you please advise what files need to be included or altered in order to achieve this.
Cheers

Thanks !

I need some additionnal information :) In the file class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php

At the line 61

Code: [Select]
$query = 'SELECT a.category_id, a.category_name, a.category_publish, a.category_description, a.list_order, f.category_parent_id, f.category_child_id'
I've added "a.category_description"

But I don't know where I must put :
Code: [Select]
if ($menu_out_level == "1") {
($row->category_description);
}

Does I need a "echo $category_description" ?

Thanks a lot for your help

EDIT : a few more details

-I've created a copy of your hack for each of my lvl2 main theme. So the title of the lvl2 cat is showing by the title of the module
-I need to show the category description just before the list of child theme (and under of the title of the module)
-I'm lost because I don't know how to show lvl2 category description only (not lvl1 and lvl3),

@Flo:
Ah, I see. Then what I told you is not going to work. And yes, you are right, in my previous code "echo" would have helped :)

Anyways, this is more complicated, because you have MANUALLY titled the mod title. This is not coming from my hack. My hack is just looking at the starting point and end point to list the categories.

You'd need to create a new function to call this specific description out.

Something like:
function getCategoryDesc($catId = 0) {
   $db = &JFactory::getDBO();
   $query   = 'SELECT category_desc'
           . ' FROM #__vm_category'
           . ' WHERE category_id ='.$catId;
   $db->setQuery( $query);
   return $db->loadResult();
}

Then in the function outCategoryList, right after "if ($row_level <= $level_stop) {"

place
if {$menu_out_level == "1") {
 echo getCategoryDesc($catId);
}

Beyond this, you're on your own. I cannot help on this one further, as I have others to help, and upgrades to make. Good luck!

@clunky:

You'd need to do a BUNCH of customization to the form. Frankly, if you're asking me where to start, you probably are over your head :(.

You'll need to look at the
function listProducts
in the class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php file.

In there, you'll need to echo the product add to cart form. You can look at the html form code on ANY product page by viewing the source. You pretty much need to replicate that form code for each product, in function listProducts.

Hi Forrest
Thank you for your reply, I have however managed to do it now.
From your mod I have now got a sliding/collapsible category list, showing all products with images and add to cart functionality, all bundled in one page called from the main menu.
It is now a 'Quick Order Form' for the clients site with ajax controlling the 'add to cart', so the user doesn't get a page refresh each time they add a product.
Very nice indeed, its what a lot of people have been searching for on here for a long time.
My code although fully functional is probably a tad messy but it seems to be working fine and reasonably fast to load, (I have a touch of css still to do for styling however).
Thanks for your help.
If anyone would like to see the page in action or have the code please pm me as its in a user area of a site and you will need access.
Or maybe Forrest if you would like to add it to your collection then let me know :-)
Thanks once again.

@clunky: Oh ya? Nice job then! :) I had entertained the idea of adding this as an option, but never got to it. I'd like to see it if you can PM me, and perhaps add it to the mod as a standard option. Indeed the system does work well for more than just a menu.

Hello Forrest !

For my left menu I'm using a click menu with swmenupro... but this mod doesn't work very well with active submenu link.

I'm trying to make a clickmenu with your mod but all the tutorials I've found is about classic menu and not virtuemart, so I'm little lost (for making difference between main and sub level categories).

EDIT: Forrest, I've made this hack :

class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php

Line 348 and 335
Code: [Select]

//My Hack
if ($menugauche == "1") {
echo '<ul class="levelg'.$menu_out_level.' '.$restart_col_sfx.'" id="">';
} else {
echo '<ul class="level'.$menu_out_level.' '.$restart_col_sfx.'" id="">';
}
//End Hack

Line 346-364
[code]
//My hack
($menugauche == "1") {
echo '<ul class="levelg'.$menu_out_level.' '.$restart_col_sfx.'" id="">';
} else {
echo '<ul class="level'.$menu_out_level.' '.$restart_col_sfx.'" id="">';
}
//End Hack

Code: [Select]
//My hack
if ($menugauche == "1") {
echo '<ul class="levelg'.$menu_out_level.' '.$restart_col_sfx.'" id="">';
} else {
echo '<ul class="level'.$menu_out_level.' '.$restart_col_sfx.'" id="">';
}
//End Hack

I'm trying to create a css menu for having the same effect as my swmenupro, but I've some problems to find mainlevel and sublevel class. I have take a look in your code and I see class="level... but when I'm trying to put class as

.menu {
 color: #730204  ;
 background-color: #ECBB03 ;
 text-decoration: none ;
 font-weight: bold  ;
}

My two menu are affected, that's why I've made this hack, for having the choice between two css styles.

So I'm started in my css with a ".levelg" but I'm lost with the use of <li> <ul> tags.

Could you give me some hints ? or someone else ? ^^

Thanks ![/code]

css. Oh so many css questions :)

use the element, then the class or id.
such as

li.levelg {
}
or
ul.menu li.levelg {
}

order it as it's wrapped in your code.
Example
<div class="menu_green">
<ul class="menu">
<li class="list"><a href="xxxx" title="XXXX">Some menu item</a></li>
</ul>
</div>

so for the menu div css:
div. menu_green {
}

for the ul of green menu:
div.menu_green ul.menu {
}

for the li of green menu:
div.menu_green ul.menu li.list {
}

for the links of green menu:
div.menu_green ul.menu li.list a {
}

And then you have ACTIVE states, in which the menu is active when clicked. If you want your link to look different when active (current page).

div.menu_green ul.menu li.list a.active {
}
(or something like that. Look at the html output for active links to find where "active" is used. I don't remember off the top of my head)

Hi
 I also have a css question but it's about the arrangement of categories on the page
  Applying your module, my categories are displayed as a list, one below another, but i need them arranged, one next to another, like a table with 3 or 4 columns or divs with float left
  I figured the answer could be the flyout page but when i check use flypage the whole page goes blank.

What should I do?
Thanks a lot

Hi All,

I m new to the forum and also Virtuemart.

First of all, I would like to thanks Forrest for this great module, its a great one and only one that could be found.

I have it (v2.7) installed with a TemplatePlazza template, everything seems fine except the flyout sub-cats. The flyout menu is always appears and sticks on the top of the page.
(http://www.techarena.com.au/images/shot.jpg)
I have tried my best to figuring it out with the CSS but have no luck (I m definitely a beginner in CSS and PHP things).

Any hint from experts and gurus (especially Forrest) will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Great module!!

I have changed the look of my flypage, still need to mess with it a little, but I am running into the same problem as the post above....

When you roll over to display the flypage, it pops up at the top of the page.

I am assuming this is a css issue, so I went in and changed my z-index to '999', but to no avail. It didn't change anything. I also went into my joomla template and changed overflow:hidden to overflow:visible and that did nothing either.

Is there an easy solution to this? :)

I've fixed the stick-top issue by comment out the "top: 0px;" and also changed "left: 180px;" to "margin-left: 180px;" and things seems going normal.

I think it would be something related to DOC type for the template - I am not expert programmer and thats what I guess.

So still got the following to be fixed:
1 - The fly-out now go a bit under the active main cat, to select subcat is a bit hard as I need to move the cursor horizontally to the right above the fly-out and down to the sub-cats, or else the fly-out will just disappear.

2 - Finding a way to delay the dismiss of the fly-out (should have something to change in the JS which I am totally blank about).

Hope someone could kindly help. Thanks in advance.

@spamhub,

Thank you!! That did fix the sticky. But now I see the other problem you are talking about. When you scroll over the category, the flyout menu appears where it should, but you cant get to the flyout fast enough before it disappears.

Hopefully this is an easy solution. I dont think it's a layout issue since we are all experiencing the same problems with different layouts.

And I just took a look at the js file...not enough there to edit/play around with, its a very simple and straightforward function. If I felt comfortable enough I may try adding functions to it...but I'm not very familiar with writing javascript. :)

@jbd123 - Add "margin-top: -10px;" to the flyout.css (.flyout class) fixed the issue. Also remember to set the menu-sfx to "-menu" so the the whole line (of the cat-name) are used rather than the text only.

Hi,

I have been messing around with this module for some time but I still cannot get it to work the way I want. My task is simple so I must be doing something wrong.
Trust me I have really tried to figure this out by myself but !

I have 2 buttons in a top menu.
By clicking the 1st I want to show CAT 8 and subs and by clicking the 2nd I want CAT 14 and below.

I have added the buttons in the menu manager as type Virtumart.
Under modules I use  mod_vm_cat_menu_specific  and set to start with CAT requests as mentioned above.

It works pretty well initially but as soon as I click an item to the right (like product och category/image) the menu jumps back to to the first CAT meny which is also the starting category in Virtuemart.

also...
When I click the 1st button that links to CAT 8 both CAT 8 & 14 shows to the right(and the opposite) in virtuemart but the menu to the left is correct.

I hope you understand but not too easy to explain.

I really need this to work and this is the only thing stopping me from going live with the new site.

Any help will be highly appreciated !

BR,
Peter

PS ! I actually never have problem with the firt button linked to CAT 8.
That is also the 1st top category in the virtuemart category list.
Maybe it just jumps back to the initial after clicking a product etc.

Yes, there are some typos in these two files
class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php
mod_vm_cat_menu_specific.php
You need to edit them and replace all $menuClass variables with $menu_class

Hello all,

I'm back from a long break. Questions??? Looks like maybe a minor update is in order to address spelling errors; I'll try to get to that very soon.

Hutson: Your parent cat name at the top of flyout is not an option through the parameters. You'd have to code it in.

The way the code is written (from my recollection at this point), what you want to do is not just a quick line of code. You'd have to make another function in class.vm_cat_menu_specific.php

Ultimately "function outCategoryList" is where you'd want to add your code to retrieve the name. You'll see a line of code such as:
Code: [Select]
if (($use_flyout == "1") && ($menu_out_level == "2")) {And within that if statement you'd want to add something like:
Code: [Select]
echo get_cat_name($catId);
get_cat_name is the function you'd have to create to retrieve the category name via the category id. You can add this function to the top of the class document as well. Something like:

function get_cat_name($catId = 0) {
   $db = &JFactory::getDBO();
   $query   = 'SELECT category_name'
           . ' FROM #__vm_category'
           . ' WHERE category_id = '.$catId;
   $db->setQuery( $query);
   return $db->loadResult();
}

--------------------
It's either that or use a global param to pass the category name from "function listCategories" back to the previous function "function outCategoryList".

Either should work fine, just a preference.

First of all thanks alot for this category extension. It is marvellous i must say. I have a problem that I have tried to solve and I dont know if it is technically impossible or what I am doing wrong. I have a site that sells posters and bussiness cards and I have created 2 separate menus. First one links to the module I downloaded from here and I have set the correct start category and it shows all the correct products. The menu takes you to the browsepage of that category. I have done the same for the next menu. So far so good I have two separate menus linking to the specific products in the correct category. The problem arise when I go to the second category and click on a product. I come to the correct flypage of the clicked product but in the left menu the products from the first category are loaded. See this site www.printhouse.se to see the problem. The site is in swedeish. The first category is "visitkort" and the second is "affischer". Any help would be appreciated. Thanks againg for the flexible module.

Thank you for the quick reply Forrest. I created a newmenu with a virtuemart link under it. I assigned that menu itemid under the overrride and it is now working. Thanks a lot. Unfortunately now when the flypage loads the category with the products is missing from the left. The flypage occupies the whole page. This I can live with it but it would be better if the category would be there so the customer dont have to click on the back button every time they need to pick a new product.

@flora01: yes. Just extract the module files and overwrite the old with the new ones in Joomla /modules/ folder. No need to uninstall and reinstall.

@Heresh80: Create another VM store menu item link in Joomla. Use this menu itemid as the second itemid in the module. The reason it's all alone is because you don;t have another menu item for that itemid... hence no modules can be assigned to it. Remember, all modules are assigned to menu itemids.

@Heresh80 & @Gui:

There may be an easier way to do what you both are trying to accomplish. You do not need to create 2 different menu items for each category. You create 1 menu item, but have it start on the third level :) (assuming that your two seperate menus are already subs of the greater products menu).

Hence:

Products
  >Product Sub 1
    >>product sub sub a
    >>product sub sub b
  >Product Sub 2
    >>product sub sub c
    >>product sub sub d

By specifying a start cat of PRODUCTS (or 0), but specifying a LEVEL START of 3... this means that depending on the selected sub_cat the third level will be displayed accordingly.

either:
     >>product sub sub a
     >>product sub sub b
or
    >>product sub sub c
    >>product sub sub d

Playing with itemids and multiple store links can be tricky.

Hey Forrest thanks for your option but found a different solution.

Just edit administrator/components/com_virtuemart/classes/ps_session.php

At the beginning of the method getShopItemid() of the class ps_session

Add this :
if(!empty($_REQUEST['Itemid']))
         $_REQUEST['shopItemid'] = $_REQUEST['Itemid'];

And magic happens!

Hi

Thank you for this module, it has been awesome so far. Just one small thing, i don't know if it's possible or not but is it possible to have it so that the module displays the category level depending where you are in the shop?

For example you have the categories

What I basically want to do is only show the subcategories but I would rather have only the one module doing this so say you had selected to go to Category 1 I only want to see the subcategories under Category 1 and if I had gone to Category 2 I only want to see the subcategories under Category 2.

Is it possible to do this without having seperate modules which specify the start category?

It's a brilliant module regardless and has been incredibly useful to me so far this is the only bit I'm missing at the moment.

Hi,

I don't know if anybody's witnessing the same problem as mine.
but on IE browsers, the flyout flickers as the mouse is moving in the flyout box...

I'll be more than happy to provide the url if needed

Thanks in advance for your help
Regards

Edit: I noticed that it loses this focus when the mouse hovers over the empty spaces in the flyout
so, as long as the mouse is hovering over letters, it's stable
but when it moves to the empty, the flyout disappears ,then reappears in less than a second

Hello Forrest,

First of all i have to thank you for your great working you are doing.
Secondly i would like to ask if there is a way to set the module to show only the sub-categories of the active category.

an example..
Let's say the e-shop have to master categories..

cat1 & cat2

Both master categories have subcategories..

cat1
-- sub11
----- sub111
----- sub112
-- sub12
----- sub121
----- sub122
----- sub123
cat2
-- sub21
.....

I want to configure your module to show me on the menu area only those options

----- sub121
----- sub122
----- sub123

when i am browsing the sub-category 12

and show me only those options:

----- sub111
----- sub112

when i am browsing the sub-category 11

I hope the example helps you understand my question..
Thank you in advance for your time.

@mbit: sure, just attach your css into your Joomla template's css. That is fine.

@axcelia: I literally wrote how to do what you wanted a few posts up! :). Likewise, you may consider using Joomla module called metamod to limit when this module is shown.

@flora01: sounds like a css issue. Yo might want to make a css line that addresses the .focus .hover for the entire div that creates the flyout.

@gfisaris: I believe you and axcelia want the same thing. So see my comment for axcelia.

Thank you for your reply but I have tried specifiying the start category as 0 and start level of 2 and it still just displays all root level categories rather than starting at level 2 on the page I'm on.

I could specifiy the category then start level but then I would need a module for each page and I've been trying to avoid that.

Love the module, Works awesome! Quick question however -

On my website (http://www.demon50s.com/) in the products section, i dont want the categories to be clickable (chassis, engine, tools) and in black colour instead of red as the sub categories are.

Is this possible in any of the back end options are is that something ill have to modify in the CSS (not very competent at that YET!)  :D if so any hints as to what ill have to change.

Thanks  :-*

I can't get the Subcategory images to show.

Category images show just fine, but not the subcategory items. Anyone can tell me what could be wrong? I have uploaded images to both shop_image/cateogory and shop_image/category/resized with the number of the category for the name, but nothing.

I'm really stressed because the deadline is today. I appreciate any help!

Try looking at the URL of the submenu images (I know the images are missing, but hte code should still be pointing to a URL.) What is it saying. This should clue you into what's wrong.

Hello Forrest!
I am not really an expert on VM. I am currently working on the website below.
http://www.electrosynthesi.eu/

Although the categories are nice made, I just need to change the icons of the categories on the left. I dont really like the small house and the folder icons. Maybe a more futuristic design is needed. I think is the current one is the virtue mart default?! Is that feasible via your module?
Excuse me if the question is off-topic. I am reading exceptional feedback for your work and i just thought i could give it a try

Keep up the good work!

It looks like the placement is even all the way down but the only ones that can be selected are the ones that are close to the actual menu words. Forrest i think you make the most helpful module I've ever seen. Your work is excellent. My sincere congratulations!
I don't know if there is the best place to ask my question about the module but i give it a try and please correct me.

Here is my scenario:
I have a website with a menu of two items. The first menu item is "CATALOGUE" and the second is "SHOP". I have VM and Forrest's module installed of-course.
I created two instances of the module. The first one is visible only at the CATALOGUE page and the second one is only visible at the SHOP page.
In VM i have 4 categories. The first two categories are visible in CATALOGUE only and the other two are visible at SHOP page only.
As far as good.. And here comes the problem:
When i click at any category at the SHOP's page module, Joomla reloads the CATALOGUE page with its own menu (the first two categories).
Is there any way to isolate the module, in order to work independent based on what page somebody browses ? (CATALOGUE with its own products and categories, SHOP with its own products and categories)

Thank you very much :)
Title: Re: New Products & Categories Menu - J! Style, Suffix, Itemid, SSL, Cat Start, Hide
Post by: el_bot on February 16, 2011, 07:45:38 am
ok; I get 2.9.
Forrest: two things:
1)Why you use <div id="relative_div" style="position:relative;z-index:0"></div> in outCategoryList? You are violating HTML if the module is used 2 times in the same page.

2) Suggerence: number of products and number of subcategories styled apart from the title of link (someshing like " <a...>name product/category </a> <span class= "num-prod"> {12} </span> <span class = "num-cat"> {13} </span>

Perarg:
I think that you should look at param Store Override ID (product or categories... i don't know); that param affects the Itemid (?Itemid= id item) in the URLs generated; that's id affects what module are load.
That is, in the module that shows the cataloge put the Id of the item (link) CATALOGUE (when you follow this link the module will be append the correct ItemId in every link generated; then when you foolow some of these links, the itemId will be the same, and Joomla will be load the same modules).
The same for SHOP.
(Am I in the correct Forrest?)

I downloaded this mod, and like what I have seen from other users. Only thing is that I can't seem to figure out how I can get the categorie listed in the main menu of Joomla.
I created an VM menu called webshop. I would like to have the categories of VM listed under this webshop link. At the moment categorie list will get listed in a new section. How do I get this solved??

If you would like to have it visualized what I mean you can take a look at http://www.in-progress.nl/ama and the click on Webshop in the main menu on the left side.

At the moment I added VM to every categorie to get it listed correctly in the menu, and the menu 'Webshop' is inserted as an article.

In the attached image this is also visible.
In FIG. 1 I have the desired situation, but when I have VM added to the Webshop menu the result is like in FIG. 2 which is not the desired situation.

So how do I go about to get the situation as listed in FIG. 1 (either with or without the subcategories listed)without having to list every categorie as seperate VM categorie.

I use Joomla 1.5.22 and VM 1.1.7 and the latest version of you mod v2.8.

Thanks el_bot! I figured out a solution. But now i came up with another issue.
In my website i have 2 VM menus (ex. Shop and Store). The first one shows the half categories and the second one shows the other half. The first menu (Shop) has id 228 and the second menu (Store) has id 234.
I created two instances of your module and assigned in Store ID Override - Categories the appropriate numbers (228 and 234). The modules work great, but if i click in any product i get ONLY the itemid of the first menu (228) even if i am at the 234 menu.
I gave as Store ID Override - Products the same numbers but with no luck...
Any idea ??

el_bot: Yes, I have a coding conflict when using id. Obviously not thinking about multiple mods when I did that code... oops. Should have a counter or something to append a number to the end of the id. hmmm.

Perarg: Yes, you have used itemid correctly. Unfortunately, VM cateogry and product pages will not pass the second itemid you have created. VM only uses a primary itemid... the first VM menu item created. So all links within VM product and category pages will use just noe itemid... regardsless of the itemid you accessed the page from. You'll need to edit your product and category pages to detect the incoming idem and update the urls accordingly.

@mbit: Why have a menu when only the active menu is shown? Doesn't that defeat the point of navigation? I'm sure we must be misunderstanding each other.

@yae: You have simply supplied me with no info where I could help you.

Looks like the manufacturer is being supplied in the pop-up menu next to products? So only showing manufactures that are in that product/category set?

@xhgjzll: A custom php script addition I'd say.

@atranaz: Make a module position, and add CSS. Pretty much it's a javascript function that would alter the style of the module div. I do not provide css support here. There are plenty of good artilces on the web about altering css styling on divs via javascript.

@xhgjzll: Same goes for you. Just set the menu items to SHOW all, and use css styling to have them function accordingly on mouse hovers.

Here's an example category set for virtuemart:
  • By Product
    • Watches
    • Shoes
      • Big Shoes
      • Small Shoes
    • Hats
  • By Application
    • Firemen
    • Police
      • Vests
      • Hats
    • Saftey

according to this example category set i am trying to edit the module so it will hide by product + by application main subs but it ll show the active subs. meaning, if i am at the big shoes it ll show :

   watches
   shoes
      big shows
      small shoes
   hats

else if i am at the watches it ll show :
watches
shoes
hats

i want the menu to change accordingly to which main sub i am into, start from the 2lvl subs and end at the 4lvl.. possible? any hints?

Yep, two modules (one for each menu). Set the Start ID for the Top cateogries: By Product and By Application.

You may need to set the start level to 1, but can't remember off top of my head. The rest should fall into place fine. This is exactly what I designed it to do in the first place.

yes you are right but i forget to make a mention in my previous example..

if i am in watches or shoes i want the subs of by application to be hidden.. and oposite if i am Police or vests or Saftey i want the By prodycts subs to be hiden.. any solution? if i make multiple modules, one for each Top menu then it shows all the modules when i am in any sub.. can i prevent showing the modules that i am not in one of their sub?

ps if Menu Assignment worked for virtuemart categories , that would be a solution but it doesnt :/

Ah, I see. What you can use is something called MetaMod. It's a free J! module that allows you to publish or unpublish other modules based on any php factors you wish to program. MetaTempale can also do the same, but executes on a higher level... I prefer to do everything on MetaTemplate now.

Hi Forest,
I know your mod is designed for menus but could it work in a category display page? You see i am building a schoolwear site and when visitors click on branded clothes sub category i want to be able to show all the unbranded categories after the branded category the visitor clicked, have been displayed.

My shop is organised like so:

BRANDED PRODUCTS PARENT CATEGORY 1
  SUB CATEGORY 1A
  SUB CATEGORY 1B
  SUB CATEGORY 1C

UNBRANDED PRODUCT PARENT CATEGORY 2
  SUB CATEGORY 2A
  SUB CATEGORY 2B
  SUB CATEGORY 2C

Whenever a person clicks on ANY of the SUB categories 1A, 1B, 1C i want to be able to show ALL of the sub categories 2A,2B,2C. I'm not bothered about the products, its just the category display that i am worried about.

The idea is that whenever someone looks at branded products, then i want to be able to show the unbrabded product categories also.

I look forward to your reply.

Hi Forrest,

Thanks for this great mod! I have version 2.7.0.

I'm working on a site that has roughly 600 categories, arranged in 4 main categories, with about 5 or 6 2nd level categories in each main category and the rest in 3rd, 4th or 5th level sub-categories. There are no products in the main categories or even the 2nd level categories. Products are only in the bottom levels and that will vary from the 3rd to 5th level.

 Not all of the bottom sub-categories will have products in them all of the time, so it would be WAY easier to not show empty product sub-categories than to go through and unpublish them. However I do see a lot on this subject within the VM forum, so realize it may not be an easy thing. Can this be done within vm_cat_menu_specific? I am pretty familiar with VM and can hack the code with a little direction.

It seems some VM category mods have this feature and there were some topics on this a few years back, so I guess it can be done, but I can't figure out how to apply his hacks to your mod. http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=40894.0 (http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=40894.0)

I was going to ask a different question, so attached my settings, but I'm going to try some other things before I ask that question.

Thank you!

I am working with a site that was set up by a programmer. I am not a programmer. I know just enough to be dangerous.

I am working with the parameters of what I believe is this same module. My screen looks similar to the screenshot at the beginning of this thread, just in a different order.

I am having trouble getting the categories to show in the left side navigation on my site without showing all of the individual products within the categories. I have attached pictures of what it looks like when you open the page. The "Maggie Bags Categories" heading shows, but you have to click on it to expand the menu and show the categories.

I want it to be open, as in the second picture, when the page first loads.

I have also attached a screenshot of my current settings. More below this post.

Can anyone help? I'm sure it's a simple fix in the parameters, but I don't want to go too far without knowing what I'm doing.

Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

It should have. You may have needed to CLEAR YOUR BROWSER AND J! CACHE?

@werkin: If I understand you right, all you need to do with my hack is play with the starting id's or start/stop levels. This will only alter the menu display though... not other aspects of VM (like breadcrubs, etc).

@umeeshh: no idea what happened. Maybe try an uninstall and reinstall. This is only for J1.5, not any other Joomla version. I have not had any other complaint like this, so it must be something unique to your setup.

Hi,

I guess you misunderstood my question. Sorry. To put it more simply, I want to know if you could help me with a hack to automatically hide any of the bottom level categories if they are empty. If a parent category has sub-categories, it should only be hidden if NONE of the subcategories have products in them.

We have way to may categories to do this manually.

Thank for any help you can give me with this!

@werkin: I don't have a written solution for you. I have not directly looked at this code for several months. That said, I would alter the
function getSubCategories($catId = 0)
and within that, leverage the
function countProducts($catId = 0) {
to count the products in the subcategories found in
function getSubCategories($catId = 0)
If the countProducts function returns 0 for the subcateogry, and every subcategory, then the function could return "false".

Then the rest will work as is, as the
function outCategoryList($catId = 0, $row_level = 1, $menu_out_level = 1)
which prints the output, does not run if
function countSubCategories($catId)
is false.

Hi,
I don't have the empty categories solution yet - still need more time to work on that. But, I was able to get the horizontal menu working, I commented out alll the relevant CSS styles and kind of started from scratch as I added them back in to figure out what was working and what was not. I was combing a modified flyout.css with the CSS styles from another horizontal menu on the site. I was nearly positive it was not the CSS that was giving me problems, and nearly wrote in a question about the settings - but it was the CSS!
Title: Re: New Products & Categories Menu - J! Style, Suffix, Itemid, SSL, Cat Start, Hide
Post by: werkin on June 23, 2011, 02:02:21 am
One last question on the horizontal menus. I use a different horizontal menu within each of my four main virtuemart categories. This works fine and I can use the Store ID Overrides for each main category. This is very important in order to display the correct menu all the way through that main category and it's subcategories and products.

So now I have to make an "overall" menu for the Home Page. I can't use "all categories" for two reasons. 1) It times out and I get a blank page 2) I still need to apply the 4 different Store Ids.

So, I'd like to create 4 different module occurrences for the menu on the Home page, but have the start level to be the category start parameter itself - just the one link, with the rest dropping down under it. The way it works now is that for Level Start it says ... "1 is the first level under the category start parameter", so ideally I'd like to change that to 0 or -1 (for example) to start at the category start parameter itself.

I hope I explained that clearly. :-) Is there a way to do that or a hack to do that?

Thank you!

Title: Re: New Products & Categories Menu - J! Style, Suffix, Itemid, SSL, Cat Start, Hide
Post by: Forrest on June 23, 2011, 03:34:49 am
Well this too is CSS. You do not need to do much different than you have done for the separate modules.

The difference will be... you'll probably start at the top level category. (maybe leave blank). If you now have all categories... then use the ID REMOVAL on each modules to remove the three of the four respectively for each mod.

Then the rest is css to make it look like one menu, and to have dropdown feel.

Well, that worked perfectly (Thank you!) except for one thing...

I can enable 3 of the modules, but when I enable the 4th module I get the timeout problem and the totally blank page again. Is there somewhere that I can increase the timeout length?

Hi,
I have just loaded over 600 products to my shop and I now have a problem with the menu when I browse sub categories and click next to view more products. I am using Joomla 1.5.23 and Virtuemart 1.1.9.

About the site:
I thought I had it perfectly setup until I clicked 'next' in the sub-sub category browse page under virtuemart main category 2.  When I click on next the menu switches back to menu one and shows the submenus of menu one but the browse page still shows the items under menu 2.  I need the menu to stay in the chosen category under virtuemart main category 2.

Sample page: http://203.123.59.150/~sunsetbo/index.php/abc-a-sbs?page=shop.browse&category_id=5 (http://203.123.59.150/~sunsetbo/index.php/abc-a-sbs?page=shop.browse&category_id=5).  If you click next at the bottom of the page it will switch to 'Books' page and show submenus under this page and not ABS/SBS.

Turning 'debug' on shows that when you click next and also into a product (in the abc/sbs menu) the item id (Joomla menu id) goes back to 3, the item id should stay at 4.  I thought by setting 'store id override categories' to 4 would have fixed this, but it does not.

Do you have any idea how to fix this?

Thank you
Regards
Lene

Post by: Forrest on July 09, 2011, 19:15:42 pm
The problem is you have assigned one product to TWO categories.
And then you are using the store_id override to create a second VM id.

VM by default one store_id. So anytime you click a link within VM that is not from the menu where the store_id override is used... the VM code will revert back to the main store itemid.

the way to overcome this is to Grep your files for "Itemid", and add a custom code that "GETS" the current itemid if = to "X", where "X" is your second category's store id override. A bit of a pain, but it's the only way to get this work work correctly in your environment.

Hi Forrest

Thank you for your reply.

This is my first time using Virtuemart, I'm just getting to know some of the basics.

Is there any other (or better) way to achieve the two categories in the main menu?

If not, I have MetaMod Pro installed, I might be able to use this to solve my problem.

Hello All!,

First let me say that Forrest made a very very very great work!. Thanks to people like you, the Open Software. community gets bigger and bigger.

Now, I would like to ask a question that is turning me crazy. I am new in Joomla and of course in VirtueMart. I am creating a very simple online shop that has Products and everyone is placed into a category of VirtueMart.

My structure uses Categories and Sub-categories, and a product can be into a Category that has no sub-categories, or into a sub-category. I have a max. of only 2 levels.

I want that, when I click over a Parent category on the menu, a page will be displayed with the subcategories of these Parent category. For example, if I click on "Art", then I want a page to display 3 boxes with an image
and the name of the subcategories Art -> "ArtOnDemand", "Nou Digital Gallery", "Independents" .

In fact I want what you have in your website, when you click for example on "Headsets".

I managed to do these when you click on the "Products" menú link on the "Main Menu".

I see that the problem is that when you click on a link on your menu, it tries to show the products of the category or subcategory, but because these has not products, it shows "Category is empty".

I don't understand, could someone help me please?

I have to say that I was getting mad with these problem.

Finally I found the solution:

http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=88020.0

It's due to "developers" decision to put a comparison without a "!" , that makes that if a category is empty, they didn't show it.

Its a "problem" at the version 1.1.9 of VirtueMart.

Take a look at: administrator/components/com_virtuemart/html/shop.browse.php differences between V1.1.8 and 1.1.9:

around line 85 in 1.1.8

elseif( $num_rows == 0 && empty($product_type_id) && !empty($child_list)) {

becomes

elseif( $num_rows == 0 && empty($product_type_id) && empty($child_list)) {

(notice the missing ! in 1.1.9)

Try to put the !, and it solves the problem.

Thanks for the extension, I have just implemented it and it is working great in Safari and Firefox,
however it is flickering in IE8, when the user moves between sub menu items, it flickers.

Has anyone come up against this before ?

Thanks.

Hi Forrest, Before downloading this hack, I wanted to check with you if it will possibly fix the issue i'm having.

if I go to www.mydomain.com/products.html the page displays perfectly, but as soon as I click on one of the product categories, it changes the url to direct to something to the effect of www.mydomain.com/<b>registration.html</b>?page=shop.browse&category_id=6

The problem is that registration.html, should in fact be products.html

Do you think your hack will work for this problem i'm having?

@CreativeDesigns, the problem you have is with your master VM Itemid. I cannot stress enough this problem! In your case, registration.html is your Master VM Itemid. This is easily fixed by followiny my instructions. Beyond that, this modules is not a hack, but a complete Joomla module for VM. I will work likely for your needs once you fix your itemid problem. I suggest you turn off your SEF for testing. Please see my post here (specifically "I did create a Joomla menu link to VM component" section):

Thanks Forrest. I have been following your troubleshooting
* turned SEF off on global config _ i didn't have any sef on virtuemart
* testing this on the front end shows it's definitely a problem with the itemid
* I know that in the beginning I DID create a Joomla menu link to VM component - it's called Products
* I additionally added a menu item called Register so that there is a place for users to register themselves so they can buy from the shop
* I added the vm_Categories list module to all of the "product" pages. This seems to be where the problem lies
* If I click on Products or Register from the top menu, it works fine. But as soon as I click any of the product links on the categories list on the page, thats where the problem occurs

Does this help at all?

Post by: Forrest on September 29, 2011, 22:10:00 pm
I already know what your problem is. You need to identify what your Master Itemid is. I can tell you it is the Register link. This means you need to rename that link to Store or Shop in your J! menu, and create a make a new link for your register. Once you do this, this will be your outcome for most all VM pages:

www.mydomain.com/shop.html?page=shop.browse&category_id=6

UPDATE: I just went ahead and fixed this for you. You can move forward with any menu module you want now.

Haha.. I believe that people should be "rewarded" for the help they give. Even if it's only a little bit.
Either way, you will get a load of really good karma coming your way thanks to all the help you give those around you!

Most people would sell the modifications you've made - but instead, you help people to improve what they have already got, and if they encounter problems, you help them with a smile on your face. Good Karma is coming your way my friend :)

Thanks again. I wish there were more people like YOU in the world :)

I am missing something -  Div Fly out set
.flyout {
    background: url("../images/bg_blue_flyout.gif") repeat-x scroll left bottom #F9FDFF;
    border-color: #0092DB;
    border-radius: 3px 3px 3px 3px;
    border-style: solid;
    border-width: 1px;
    color: white;
    float: left;
    left: 180px;
    overflow: visible;
    padding: 10px;
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    width: 750px;
    z-index: 3000000000000000;

Set mid Col also to z-index:1;

No matter how I adjust the z-index -  I cannot find the one that sets flyout above the main col   ?

I changed the left column to  width=450 -  And now the flyout works  - I then had to set the headers and tables to 171px to compensate for the column width change -   Fly out now works better -

hi everyone,

i really love this module. it's help me a lot.
but now i found some problem and cannot fix this yet. if you guys can explain me, i'm very thank you.

First i assigned main menu like this,

(http://image.free.in.th/z/ii/screenshot25541113at12.48.35am.png) (http://image.free.in.th/show.php?id=c5246235ab7a9ba56f2b128952110e51)

Home, How to order, About us are link to joomla page.
Shop is link to Virturemart module (menu item id is 38 and not select category for this)
Kits & Gifts is link to virtuemart category id = 6 (menu item id of kits & gifts is 41)

Second, i created VirtueMart Product and Category Specific XHTML to list sub categories of category id 6 and assigned to Kits & Gifts main menu.
everything is fine like this,

(http://image.free.in.th/z/iq/screenshot25541113at12.57.50am.png) (http://image.free.in.th/show.php?id=7dd140e16ad56e65a2a53bc1726de2c9)

Collections and Customisable are subcategories of Kits & Gifts category.
Ready Set Glow - Light is product of Collections category.

problem is when i clicked on Collection, Customisable or Ready Set Glow - Light this VirtueMart Product and Category Specific XHTML menu doesn't appear.
it seems like just appear in Kits & Gifts(cat = 6) that i assigned to menu.

how can i display menu to subcategory or product page too ?

Thank you very much.

Hi guys,

 :D first i can solved my problem with " Store ID Override - Categories " and " Store ID Override - Products " parameters.

if anyone found errors like me, please do like this,

first create link to virtuemart store in your main menu but do not publish if you need (as i read from page 1, Forest explain this many times in this topics).
second, create link to you category:
e.g. i created link in main menu for " Make Up " category (cat id = 7), this menuiteid = 43.
then i created link in main menu for " Kits & Gifts " category (cat id = 8 ), this menuitemid = 44.

now i can create my mod_vm_cat_menu_specific module,
first i create " Make Up List " for list all subcategories and product in left side of my page.
i assigned " Make Up List " for Make Up top menu.
*** put Store ID Override - Categories = 43
*** put Store ID Override - Products = 43

and i repeat steps for my " Kits & Gifts List " but change parameter to 44
*** put Store ID Override - Categories = 44
*** put Store ID Override - Products = 44

and now let's test, hope everything goes in the right way  ;D

Thanks Forest for a big sweet module.  i really love  ;D

I'm trying it but I have a small problem... I used the override to see each submenu in each subcategory, but now one category, the last one, is missing in the breadcrumb.

How can I solve it?

Hi Forrest:

First, thank you very much for your work. I am in way over my head with this problem. The template I am using has a drop down menu showing virtuemart product images. I downloaded your mod because when I create a product exactly like in the demo, the product doesn't appear in the module. I have spent hours trying to get an answer from the developer to no avail. I do hope your mod will give me the result I want.

The drop down menu has only 1 level, but shows three images for each menu section. I am not sure whether or not the Mega Menu module is in conflict with yours or not.

I could really use some help with this when you get a moment.

Thanks again

thank's for that, but  i search a virtuemart menu like yours, but i want to know if you menu can show only the categorie or products on current virtuemart page.
Because we have 400 categories and 42000 products. so when we are at a level like category, i want see only the sub categorie and products of that categorie. do you think t's possible to put automaticly the first level cat id on current id of virtuemart page ?

I'm from France and it's not easy to explain my enduiry.
for example if i go on the category with id 235, can it be possible to see only that category 235 and sub categorie of 235 and products ??

Well the mega and flyout menus only work on the first level output as you have, so additional menu levels (2, 3,...) will show within the flyout.
As for looking as if they (level 3 and 4) are on the same "level", check your html output and corresponding css. Each menu level has unique css assigned to them. You can use css to add indents, color changes, images, etc to your needs.

How long... have you downloaded the latest module?
If so, are you using the mega or flyout options? If not, it is just a matter of creating or leveraging your css.

Hey,

First of what a great module!

But I've having an issue I can't seem to resolve. It involves the use of third level sub-categories, I'm using  Joomla 1.5.22 & VirtueMart 1.1.4.

Example:
Category
   Sub-Category
      Sub-Sub-Category
         Products

So I've selected that when I'm in my category it needs to be dropped out specific to the level were I'm at.

So when I'm in my Sub-Category the menu is like this:
Category 1
Category 2
Category 3
Category 4
Category 5
   Sub-Category 1
   Sub-Category 2
   Sub-Category 3

Then when I got the the products in Sub-Category 1 it's like this:
Category 1
Category 2
Category 3
Category 4
Category 5
   Sub-Category 1
      Product 1
      Product 2
      Product 3
   Sub-Category 2
   Sub-Category 3

So far the menu is working like a charm. However when I use the following setup things get out of wack.

Category 1
Category 2
Category 3
Category 4
Category 5
   Sub-Category 1
      Sub-Sub-Category 1 (Product be here.)
      Sub-Sub-Category 2
      Sub-Sub-Category 3
   Sub-Category 2
   Sub-Category 3

So I click on Sub-Sub-Category 1 to view my products and I go to the page with my products however the fold out navigation is gone and has returned to it's originial state like this:

Category 1
Category 2
Category 3
Category 4
Category 5

How can I fix it so it becomes like this:

Category 1
Category 2
Category 3
Category 4
Category 5
   Sub-Category 1
      Sub-Sub-Category 1
         Product 1
         Product 2
         Product 3
      Sub-Sub-Category 2
      Sub-Sub-Category 3
   Sub-Category 2
   Sub-Category 3

With "Expolinc" being the main category, "Expolinc Rollup" the sub-category, "Expolinc Rollup Promo" the sub-sub category and "Expolinc Rollup Promo" the product.

The fold out menu will disappear when you click on the sub-sub category 'Expolinc Rollup Promo" to view the products.

Hi. I'm new to Virtuemart, but i just love this module... I have a question though:

I have a TOPMENU item that is a VIRTUEMART menu link to a main category of my shopo named "CLINICA".

Is it possible to have a flyout menu from the TOPMENU when i hover the mouse over it, just like when using my category menu?

Thanks in advance

hello,

thank's for that, but  i search a virtuemart menu like yours, but i want to know if you menu can show only the categorie or products on current virtuemart page.
Because we have 400 categories and 42000 products. so when we are at a level like category, i want see only the sub categorie and products of that categorie. do you think t's possible to put automaticly the first level cat id on current id of virtuemart page ?

I'm from France and it's not easy to explain my enduiry.
for example if i go on the category with id 235, can it be possible to see only that category 235 and sub categorie of 235 and products ??

and

There is an update due out in about 2 weeks. It is suppose to do this now, but may be buggy. If it's not working, wait for the update.

there is any advance about this?

I'm in the same situation like @strouve.

It is possible auto select the current category ID?

thanks

Ultra brilliant extension, found it as usual by mistake and works fantastically!
I am trying to create different submenus that appear only when the user selects a main category. Like when he picks Bicycle the sub-menu should show Mountain, Racing etc. and when he picks Car the submenu should show only Gas, Petrol etc.

Any ideas??
Thank you again for a really helpful extension.

@darkelf: I'd need a bit more information? Where are the main categories being selected? In the same mod position? Or will they be in a Main menu, and you want this mod to show separately (different mod location) after the Main category selection.

The main categories appear as a main menu (probably left) and the dependable sub-categories as a separate menu (probably again left under the main menu). So they should be 2 different modules. User selects something from the top main menu, and the relevant submenu appears (along of course with the relevant vm page).
Thank you!

You can set the menu module up to only show sub categories by putting the "Level Start" option at "2" (without quotes) under the Module Parameters. This will then only show the menu at the second level (not main level categories, but 1st set of sub categories).
You will also want to make sure "Always Show Sub Items" is set to "No" under Advanced Parameters.
As I recall set, "Show Root Menu Item" to "No" as well under Advanced Parameters.

From there, the menu will show accordingly, only showing the sub-menu of the active main category selected.
HOWEVER, this does not prevent the Module CONTAINER from loading (the div in which the menu mod would load), as that is Joomla dependent based on pages. I suggest, if you have what I would expect to be a blank module loading on pages where no category is produced on Joomla pages, that you look into metamod. Use metamod to load my menu module only on Virtuemart Category pages with a small php script.

Hey Forrest,

Been using earlier versions of this mod all throughout my site www.redlinesuperstore.com and along with metamod ans csvi import now rank among the top 3 most used items on my site.  Since I had so many different menu variations already set up, I didn't want to take a chance of messing it all up with the most recent version so I renamed the module and added _new at the end.  I changed all references to that in the xml file as well as the 2 php files however I am noticing that some of the css classes from this module are now overriding some of the css of the other (older) version of the menu.  I also had the original one modified (and created into another version) that actually revered the listing of categories in that instead of having to list the categories that I didn't want to show, it will only show the categories that I place in there. (Needed this part for a specific menu i use in over 40 different pages on the site.) Anyways, to make a long story short, the new module is wreaking havoc across the other two modules (the vm_menu class seems to be overriding other menu styling).  I would love to use this instead of the original one I am using but I am not sure why I am having such a difficult time this go around...  :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Adam

It would be nice to port that one to VM2.

I was just looking for this, I think lot of people could use it, if it exist :)
I could not find a good way to at least include "Categories" like a menu, in any way.... maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
At least like a normal menu with submenues... (im using megamenu/t3)
Category
... subcat
... subcat
Category2
... subcat
...etc.

for VM2+J25

Regards.
