Up to VM 4.0.4 (or 6) I could update VM though the Joomla updater.
VM4.0.8/10 are not listed as new updates.
And no, deleting and rebuilding the Update Sites does not help.
The xml-files for VM updates only list 4.0.6 (com) and 4.0.4 (pkg).

I don't think the latest 4.0.6 and 4.0.10 were released into the Joomla update system. Maybe due to a continual finding of bugs & buglets. In any case, as far as I'm concerned, the best way to install now is as a full package using the Joomla extensions installer, especially as it is a simple drag-and-drop process.
The latest public package is http://dev.virtuemart.net/attachments/download/1355/com_virtuemart.4.0.10.10767_package_or_extract.zip
This was announced in VM News, but I believe Milbo was ill and the news ended up with a typo, announcing VM 4.0.8 instead of 4.0.10.

Right. I did a release and we directly got new bug reports. So I just uploaded them on dev.virtuemart.net and I spread the links or people having bugs which should be solved in the new versions. The 4.0.12 should be really ready, so I changed the xml now on virtuemart.net.
and yes the update for the core loads the whole package and updates the whole package.
