I just found that when refund is done the string COM_VIRTUEMART_CREDIT_NOTE is missing into the pdf invoice.
This one is also missing on transifex: com_virtuemart_orders.ini (https://www.transifex.com/virtuemart/virtuemart/translate/#fr_FR/vm-site-com_virtuemart_orders/13767791)
I've translate it to:
COM_VIRTUEMART_CREDIT_NOTE="Regulated Invoice" en-GB.com_virtuemart_orders.ini
COM_VIRTUEMART_CREDIT_NOTE="Facture régulé" fr-FR.com_virtuemart_orders.ini

I don't see the language key COM_VIRTUEMART_CREDIT_NOTE in my invoices, even if I change them. What are you doing in your case that this key becomes visible?
Perhaps it is a piece of old code for an old invoice layout, or code for a new future 'refund' layout.
Probably should be COM_VIRTUEMART_CREDIT_NOTE="Adjusted Invoice"
