Title: Running Virtuemart 2.0.24c with Joomla 3.6.4
Post by: joompiter on December 02, 2016, 12:37:02 PM
Hello,

is there someone out there having experience about running Virtuemart 2.0.24c (or similar) with the latest Joomla 3.6.4. I am about to migrate a shop in two steps, in the first step, Joomla! itself will be updated. Can anyone estimate the effort for a Joomla! professional to get step 1 run?

Thanks in advance,

Stefan

VM 2.0.24c DOES NOT work with Joomla! 3.6.4. You must update extensions first, only then update Joomla. But before you do anything at all, create a backup.

this is completely the wrong way around

get VM2-> VM3.0.18 working on I assume your joomla 2.5  first.. ignore any third party VM extensions at this stage as they will need to be VM3 &&& J3 compatible

Then upgrade Joomla

do all this on a clone.. it isn't always straight forward and there can be many problems..  I find that often the J2.5->J3 is the more troublesome step

Thanks for your answers so far.

It is clear that the combination does not run ootb. Concerning the Joomla API (2->3), the differences are not that huge. The problem is that a large number of patches have been made in VM and repatching again a higher version is no good solution, too.
I am even thinking about replacing VM by a selfmade customer-specifc component, implementing only the features needed but providing a much better handling with regards to product management. (but I am sure you do not want to discuss such ideas.)

VM3 runs perfectly in J3 & J2.5

the migration from VM2.5 ->VM3 is very straight forward.. make sure you have COMPATIBLE VM template over rides
The majority of problems seen on this forum is
1. instructions not read or followed
2. incompatible & out of date VM templates..

There are many well known template sellers selling theirs with at best  very out of date code - at worst wrong code

Don't follow at all your "patches" comment.. the VM2/3 series  has never been more capable or stable than as it is now - there are no patches...  it is a normal process of development and improvement
