I'm planning a shop upgrade from VM1.x to VM3.
In VM 1.x I use the Category Sale Pro Manager extension to apply a discount to all products in a category. This extension is no longer developed so how would I do this in VM3?

Making some tests in local I arrived to the same solution of the dummy categories (if I used the search option probably I'd saved a lot of time and tries) for discounts, but I have another problem...
I have a parent product that has 147€ discount so I inserted it in the dummy category for 147€ discount and created a rule for 147€ discount to be applied to that dummy category but the child products, that haven't the price set, don't inherit the price of the parent, and I have to insert them in the same dummy category to have the correct price, is it correct or there is a way to let them inherit automatically the parent price?
And another thing... the above product is in the golf irons category and I would like to make a 20% sales discount on all the golf irons, how I can get it? I created a rule for 20% discount for all the golf irons but in this case I have 20% plus 147€ discount (or reverse depending on priority)!!! there is a way to make a discount for a category on the full price overriding any other discount already applied?

You need to test these scenarios.. they are very specific.. but as there is no hierarchy that I know of in the discounts I assume you will get the discounts added together if both apply.. what other logic would be natural?
why not just remove the 147€?
Yes for the single case I could edit the single product and exclude it from the 147 dummy category, but imagine I have hundreds products of one category with different discounts for each product, there should have to be an easy way to make sales for that category without editing the products one by one; I'll make other tests, thank you GJC for your answer.

For tasks like this it is normal to use e.g. csvi where you can change data by csv imports etc
Or I have recoded and adapted an old VM1.1 extension that has an excel type interface to make mass changes to categories, prices, stock etc
Too difficult for me recoding!!! ;D ;D ;D

Know this is an old topic but need help. Now when applying a discount to one category in fronted I see a price for products in that category is a lover but there is no notification about that discount. Is it possible to see some notification for visitor that price is with a discount?

that is down to your template... try with the Beez template and you will see how it should work. as long as in the VM admin you are displaying the prices correctly ( discount etc)
