I'm updating website to Joomla 3.3.4 and Virtuemart 2.9.9b and need to add a product variant when ordering, eg selling DVDs and need the buyer to select PAL or NTSC. This was easy in Virtuemart 1, but can't find out how to do it in VM2. All tutorials I've found to date say to select cart variant in the custom field type that shows when making a new custom field, but that option isn't there. I've reinstalled VM2 in case it didn't install correctly but still doesn't show. Can any point me to a tutorial to make the drop down variant without the cart variant since it isn't there.

Not sure where you get it to load sample data, doesn't ask, download Virtuemart zip file and install through extension manager and upload zip file.
Anyway seemed to have got the selection I want working for display eg PAL or NTSC for buying a DVD but once selected and added to cart, the string variant isn't added to the form order I receive from customer, so I don't know type what to send.
Any suggestions please.

use cart attribute.
you can install the sampledata in tools. Be aware it deletes your current data. Or you just go to our demo http://demo.virtuemart.net/

Thanks for reply but that's the problem, there is no 'cart variant' option in 2.9.9 that is why I was told to use string. I've installed a test site using Joomla 2.5.7 and Virtuemart 2.6.8 and cart option is there and works fine. Not there, when trying to put VM2.9.9 on a Joomla 3 site.

Had a look at demo site and all my setting except one seemed correct. Only changed, is it a list, from yes to no, and now attribute appears on invoice and order form.
Thanks for the info, will now carry go with VM2.9.9 on J3 instead of going backwards.
