Title: SOLVED - Category Display Issues when using SEO link
Post by: yantheman on February 05, 2014, 22:46:02 PM
I have a weird problem on my site that has only just started to happen with new categories.

I have created a simple category and created a product to go in it.  If I access the category via the link in the category edit page of Virtuemart admin (http://www.smackitgolf.co.uk/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=category&virtuemart_category_id=80) it displays Ok.

However, if I try and access the category from the front end of the site using the SEO link (http://www.smackitgolf.co.uk/clothing-accessories/trousers-shorts) no products or sort options.

As I say, everything has been working just fine until now.

Hi,

Anyone got any ideas on this one?

Ok, I have figured this is related to nesting of categories, in that, they do not seem to be nesting correctly.  If I set the category to "top level" (/trousers-shorts) it works, however if I nest it beneath another category the issue occurs (/clothing-accessories/trousers-shorts).  However, the category can still  be accessed from its old URL (/trousers-shorts).

I have tested this with a new category and the behaviour is consistent, however, the old categories are not affected.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as I have invested a lot of time into getting products and categories organised and this is now starting to worry me!

I'm not shure but think you have actually placed that product in a subcategory /clothing-accessories/accessories/trousers-shorts
and not in /clothing-accessories/trousers-shorts, and your menu points to the latter.

Thanks for the feedback.  I have figure this one out now!

I had set the menu item as a "Virtuemart Categories Layout", when I changed this to "Category Layout" it started working  :)

So, I understand the difference between the two even though the names for these items is very similar, however, how come the configuration of the menu item affected actually browsing to the category from its parent category?

Might be related to this:

I think if you install a fresh VM (one of the latest versions) the 'Categories Layout' is not listed anymore.
