 8) 8) 8) 8) read step by step and I bet you wil get it....

Custom Fields Explained...images are named as the steps...where i think words is hard to explain...
if u need additional help let me know I'll try if ur donating.... ;D ;D

It works I took the time and now I somewhat got it...to make life easy I will do a eg of "Available size and color" for  T-shirts etc

How to..

1 click custom fields under products tab
2 click new

Enter the following as it is without notes in bracket you can then delete this when you see how it works...

3 custom field type: select plug-ins
4 Title: Available Sizes and Color (note this will be displayed above the options on the frontend so name it what you choose)
5 published: select yes
6 parent : do not change (this you can play with once you get the hang of it)
7 Cart Attribute : yes

(you can play with these later)
8 description: (leave blank for now)
9 default: (leave blank for now)
10 tooltip: for sizing use ask a question (try this it will add a blue icon on front-end)
11 layout: (leave blank for now)
12 admin: no
13 is a list: no
14 hidden: no
15 select a plug-in: VM - custom, stockable variants

16 click save
17 scroll down to "select a plug-in you will see new boxes added"

<<<THIS IS COLOR OPTION>>>
18 option name: Color
19 Option values: (enter as below)
Black
Red
Blue
Green

<<<THIS IS SIZE OPTION>>>
20 option name: Size
21 option values (enter as below)
s
m
l
xl
xxl

<<<<THERE ARE 2 MORE OPTION YOU CAN PLAY WITH THOSE WHEN YOU GET THE HANG OF IT>>>>

22 Click Save......
<<note this field can be used for any item that uses color and size to add more sizes or color  come back here and add more lines>>
see image: custom fields before moving on

PRODUCTS TIME!!
BELOW WILL COVER IF YOU ALREADY HAVE AN ITEM WITH CHILDREN

<<ALREADY HAVE AN ITEM WITH CHILDREN>>
23 go to products
24 click on the item you will like to add color and size to UNDER Product is Children of <<SECOND COLUMN>>
(this is confusing you will see the children items look on top in blue you will see the parent item click the parent of link)(or click one of the child items then scroll down to the right you will see the parent link) see images 24 and 24B

###MAKE SURE YOU ARE UNDER THE PARENT BEFORE CONTINUING###

25 click custom fields (make sure you are under parent)

26 custom field type: select Available Sizes and Color  (or whatever you named the field) SEE IMAGE
27 now you will see the options match each child with the color and size option SEE IMAGE
28 click save
29 go to the item you should see it there...

basically you have to create the field options which can be size only, color and size etc... create your item as you normally would, create your child then apply the field to match each child and thats it...make sure the child item is in stock or else it will not show the parent item also must be in stock...

Its not trust me..its a lot of words because of the steps....if you create an item then add the children then do the steps you will see.
or pay me I'll login and do the fields for you... ;D ;D

I`d be glad to make a contribution if you can help me to understand how to do this - I`ve built several VM shops which are running fine under the old VM 1.1, but because Joomla 1.5 is being outdated I will need to upgrade these sites eventually - plus I have a few new customers who I would rather not build on the old framework / switch cart solution for if I can get VM 2.0 to work.

Basically I need to replicate (almost exactly) the parent/child relationship which was standard in the old VM 1.1 setup
-see this link http://www.nutrawholesale.com/nutra-organic-plant-acids-opa/2-step-anti-flu-program?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_default.tpl&product_id=27&category_id=43

note
- the parent has no price, it is just a 'shell'
- the parent does not appear in the childrens` drop down
- the child product name + attribute (size) + price are displayed in the dropdown
- when a selection from the dropdown is made that child products` page loads

Can you make this happen / help me to understand how?
How much of a contribution are you looking for?

Thank you again.

yes, if possible.

not everyone of my clients uses inventory control, but some do.

definately need to have the orders referenced by sku in the notifications so that they are sure what to ship

seems like variant options will not show if there's no price..
but you can just give the item the lowest price then add the child with the different prices...see your item i did...

Quoteseems like variant options will not show if there's no price..
but you can just give the item the lowest price then add the child with the different prices...see your item i did...

so as far as you can tell it is indeed not possible to replicate a basic parent / child relationship from vm 1.1?

it seems so cumbersome to me to make prospective clients do math to figure out what a product costs

eg lowest price $1.57

30ml verion + $2.35

so the client has to figure out on their own that the product is $3.92

why can `t we just tell them the price?

and why not able to have a parent as a shell? - it looks SO much nicer

***I know this has nothing to do with you, other than you are just trying to help the cause & I appreciate that - it`s just that I find this so incredibly frustrating.

every time I try to do something with vm 2.0 it seems it can only be done half-assed

probably if I wasn `t so familiar with vm 1.1 it wouldn `t bother me as much, because I would have no idea of how easy & functional it should be.

what i did was create the parent with the base price then with the child just put their prices it will auto update to the price when the option is selected..

on the dropdown in your image I don `t see it showing a price?

if this product came in 10 different sizes a customer would have to click on each option 1 at a time to see how much they are?

that doesn `t make sense to me - I just can `t see people having that much patience, chances are they would just leave

This is where it ends for me... When I click "Save", everything in the options boxes I just filled in get erased. Is there something I'm missing?

step 27 is where the wheels come off the cart for me  - see attached

apparently I am supposed to see the parents' child products & be able to somehow map them to the attribute options, but I get a field asking me to add children - but when I try it won `t actually let me add children

I`m pretty sure I`m under the Parent - I`ve tried both wats to get there (see attached)
-selecting the actual parent from the products list
-slecting the parent from inside the child (as you described)

both techniques bring me to the same page - with the same results

what is really weird is I don `t even have the option you mention - VM Custom Field with Stock Control

I only have 3 plugin options

customer input text
pproduct specification
Stockable Variants

I`m using the latest 2.0.3.x rc with joomla 2.5.3

I`ve tried uninstalling & reinstalling several times

on a (I think) completely different note - trying to get joomla 2.5 / vm 2.0 working I am constantly getting 'No input file specified.' errors - apparently this is quite common, but none of the solutions I have found fix it

(after a few minutes the site starts working again, but after an irregular # of edits in the backend both the front end & back end go down

does this happen to you?

ok fresh install
- different host,
- joomla 2.5.3 installed by their CP joomla installer
-VM 2.0.3.h installed

(still only getting the 3 plugin options from before)

-followed all the instructions - using the sample data

- used the sample product 'ladder' (parent of Metal Ladder, Wooden Ladder, & Plastic Ladder in basic install)

still getting the same attributes page result when saving ('Please, add new child product! Thereafter you can select the option for each product') - see attached

also still getting error
'Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /path to site/plugins/vmcustom/stockable/stockable.php on line 187'

on front page

the custom attribute title 'Additional Sizes ' is showing up on the product page - but no dropdown

Quoteit may not. I may be the one with the out of wack install. let me know how it goes with your fresh install.

Steps I have done to get here - still unsuccessful - can anyone see what I`m missing?

fresh joomla 2.5.3 install
fresh VM 2.0.3.H install

installed the sample data

went to 'Custom Fields' (under 'Products')
selected 'New'

Custom Field Type: Plugins
Title - I used ' Additional Sizes'
Published - Yes
Parent - please select
Cart Attribute - Yes
Description - blank
Default   - blank
Tooltip   - blank
Layout position - blank
Admin only - no
Is a list? - no
Hidden - no
Select a plug-in: VM Custom stockable variants

save

then under
'Option name' i put 'Sizes'

15ml
30ml
60ml

save
save & close

go  to 'Products'

I chose "ladder" (parent of Metal Ladder, Wooden Ladder, Plastic Ladder in the standard sample products installed)
go to 'custom fields' in the product details page

under Custom Field Type: I choose 'Additional Sizes' (the custom Attribute I created in step 1)

save

here what is apparently supposed to happen is the child products are supposed to load, and I can then map the child to the custom attribute option.

but what actually happens is I get a message 'Please, add new child product! Thereafter you can select the option for each product' with the option to add children (see attched)

if I try to add a new product I am told I did - but no product is actually created

then I get that error message in the front

I `ve tried this on 2 different hosts (godaddy, greengeeks), using only the installed sample data - same results on both systems.

so many annoyances!

pros:
options visualization ok
stock control
modified price showed when option selected

cons:
some php errors in BE (nothing serious, but...)
no price showed in cart page
the childs process too cumbersome (time, skill... mistake trap)

Did you use the steps outlined by HG?

(if not, how did you get there?)

thanks for your input!

I guess I spoke too soon

though you are closer than I have ever gotten, that cart page is a mess!

HG - if you are still monitoring this - does your cart page actually work? (show prices etc)

Quotecoding is not engish

I can appreciate that... the whole beauty of virtuemart up until 2.0 is that you didn `t need to be a programmer to do simple things like add a child product.

In fact I would often show clients who could barely send email how to manage their entire shop in less than an hour.

It has now been several weeks for me, & I have yet to get a basic site working properly - and I `m not sure I`ve seen a vm 2.0 site that anyone has got working that works perfectly without any caveats.

here are the steps I took trying to follow your instructions:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

fresh joomla 2.5.3 install
fresh VM 2.0.3.H install

installed the sample data

went to 'Custom Fields' (under 'Products')
selected 'New'

Custom Field Type: Plugins
Title - I used ' Additional Sizes'
Published - Yes
Parent - please select
Cart Attribute - Yes
Description - blank
Default   - blank
Tooltip   - blank
Layout position - blank
Admin only - no
Is a list? - no
Hidden - no
Select a plug-in: VM Custom stockable variants

save

then under
'Option name' i put 'Sizes'

15ml
30ml
60ml

save
save & close

go  to 'Products'

I chose "ladder"  ***(I chose ladder, because it is DEFINITELY the parent of Metal Ladder, Wooden Ladder, Plastic Ladder in the standard sample products install)
go to 'custom fields' in the product details page

under Custom Field Type: I choose 'Additional Sizes' (the custom Attribute I created in step 1)

save

here what is apparently supposed to happen is the child products are supposed to load, and I can then map the child to the custom attribute option.

but what actually happens is I get a message 'Please, add new child product! Thereafter you can select the option for each product' with the option to add children (see attched)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

HG, If you can take a glance at this list of steps & confirm that this is the set of steps you intended to lay out, or let me know if I misunderstood something I would really appreciate it.

Thnx

voilà my steps:

1. products --> custom fields --> new: type plugin, VM-custom, stockable variants (see image 1.jpg) --> SAVE! (once saved you can access to options in the same page (see image 2.jpg)
2. products --> products --> create a new product (or pick one that already exist)
3. in the product just created --> custom field (tab) --> select your "custom field type" (created in step 1) from the dropdown listbox as in image 3.jpg
4. SAVE
5. stay in this custom field tab and create your first child writing the details in the appropriate fields as in image 4.jpg and hit the "new" button as in 5.jpg (Note that is actually saved the child as in figure 6.jpg)
6. SAVE (after saved you should see something like in fig 7.jpg)
7. now you could create a new child repeating steps 5 and 6 (and saving each time) and setting other details (flag cart variant, choose size and colo for your specific child and overprice) image 8.jpg

Loris, grazie mille!

Just a quick question, not specifically for Loris but for all the readers. I have 1 parent product Glove, then all the children are the sizes (XXS to XXXL). When I open a child and go to the tab Product Status, that is where I have entered the amount that is in stock. Is this not the right way to do stock control? In Loris' image 4 and 5 he/she entered the stock there. What is the right way?

Updated to 2.0.3I...
first impression: some worsening in custom stockable variants plugin, but some improovements on generic child variant. The cart page gets worse and worse...
Anyway, whatever your method, if working or not, you need to save too many times to create variants you want and go back and forth across parent and child

One of the biggest disappointments with VM 2.x is the fact that is contains some major flaws and the developers seem to be in denial about it with the topic of this thread being the most glaring example.  What I would love to see is a statement from one of the architects admitting that they blew it and are committed to making this feature more robust and user friendly.  I follow the threads, install the test releases and hope that the latest releaee will bring some joy.  Having an update with one feature marginally better and another marginally worse is not progress, it is a pperpetual development project.

Long ago i accepted that i could not run my site without occasional professional help.  If I adopt the new VM on top of the new Joomla I am not certain that i can even make the site work and the amount of assistance I would require would be massive and expensive beyond what i can afford.  I need to be able to shaped and maintain my site without becoming a software developer.

I understand VM was not created to exactly meet my needs, but I also believe that I am a fairly typical user.  Failure to address these issues will drive myself and many others to different e-commerce platforms.  I would do this reluctantly but I cannot ride the Joomla 1.5.x/VM 1.1.x horse forever.  In another 2-3 months I need to find a platform that I can live with long term.  I hope i can find it here.

Quote6. SAVE (after saved you should see something like in fig 7.jpg)

after I save (new product created just like Loris) all the fields go blank - no child is created, I do not get the next dialogue box.

on the front end I get this error 'Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /path-to-site/plugins/vmcustom/stockable/stockable.php on line 187

(fresh joomla 2.5.3 install / fresh VM 2.0.3H)

I `m afraid I have to agree with Bruce - after using VM exclusively for several years I am in the position of having to seriously look at all other cart options - I can `t get this to work (even the beginning basic steps like adding a child)

I `ve seen several people with the same error as I - has anyone who has gotten this error ever figured out a cure?

This is apparently not a priority for the virtuemart team... It's insane that we have to battle this ourselves with without any support from the developers.

Just the fact that there are a few that have it working and the rest of us for some reason CANNOT says something is wrong and no one has weighed in to even give us a clue as to what it is.

If someone from the development team can read through this thread and give us their thoughts on it, would be great.

Oh yes you are right about that. I do get these errors, that's why I still don't go live with the webshop, but at least all the products, children and their SKU are entered correctly. Now I'm waiting for the VM-team to fix all the bugs so I can update and go live.

Sorry, but I cannot agree.  VM 1.1 attributes and parent/child was simple and could be learned in a half hour.  I spent a day fiddling with this in 2.0 and got nowhere.  I have not given up but I would like to know that it is bug free before tackling this again.  People may learn differently but learning something that is partially broken is a whole lot more difficult.  The silence of the development team on this issue is not encouraging.

It would be helpful to which which parts are buggy so they can be avoided.  My hope is thatr all of the owrk you and others are doing will allow eventually for easy implementation by others.

I agree with Bruce - VM 1.1 was SIMPLE - anyone could learn it in less than an hour - I have built almost 50 vm shops - some of them heavily customized - yet after several weeks I cannot get the basic parent/child relationship working.

Simple would be you follow the instructions, it works.

This is pretty much the opposite.

It may have been simple for you HG - I `m beginning to thing that there are server issues in play, that this may not work at all on some hosting setups - ut`s the only reason I can think of that so many people would have exactly the same issues, yet for a lucky few the system works.
Title: Re: How to use Custom Field stockable variant (Explained) (video) (photos page 4)
Post by: Bruce Morgan on April 04, 2012, 20:31:57 PM
I guess a fundamental issue would be to ask the question, "If I get parent/child relationships to work, what will it do for me?"  With VM2.x I am not sure what the answer is.  With VM1.x the answer was simple.  I could list the product "parents" in the product category page without a lot of duplication.  The second thing was that I could have a product detail page the was easily configurable to diplay each child with its own add to cart button or as a dropdown list etc.  I chose the separate add-to-cart buttons for each child product, which in my case was differing sizes of thr same product.

I did not care if each product had a separate sku or if inventory could be tracked.  One downside of the VM1.x implementation was that after crereating the parent child relationships, these product were no longer recorded in Google Analytics.  If I had known this would happen I never would have bothered and would have used the attribute feature instead with VM1.x.  Now with VM2.x, neither option is easy to use and there is a question as to whether it really will work for all users.  This has become the "feature from hell" and may be the achilles heel that pushes VM into irrelevance.

I think there is overwhelming evidence that the developers' reach exceeded their grasp and a better solution is needed.  If nothing else, a new simpler easy to use solution is needed while this mess is fixed.

I backed up and downloaded my site with akeeba backup, installed Zend Server, and loaded my site into it. NOW the stockable variants work! This is definitely a server issue. Once I am set up and make sure everything works properly on my local site, I will contact my shared hosting company and ask them what the problem is. If I can download a free server, that works better than theirs theres something wrong..

I am getting exactly as HG describes now. This is great but its still a p*** off that now I gotta fight with my host to fix a problem I can't describe

HG do you find that when adding an option to cart, it only adds the last option product? but displays the correct option below the product name in the cart? I can add one of every item and each has the name and SKU of the last item in the dropdown list.

well that makes me feel a bit better - I had pretty much come to the conclusion that it was not me not following the steps, so it had to be a server thing - but it`s nice to get some confirmation.

Now if only we knew WHAT the server thing was... and how to fix it - I cannot see myself leaving either of the 2 hosting companies I now use as I have just tooo many websites there to move.... hopefully we can find some way of getting vm 2 to work on every hosting platform

When I get this done, I'm going to upload this back to my hosted server and see if it works (I'm pretty sure it wont). But then I'm going to contact my host and get them to connect to both sites and ask them what's wrong.

In the mean time, try Zend Server -> http://www.zend.com/en/products/server-ce/index (http://www.zend.com/en/products/server-ce/index). It takes only 15 minutes to install.

PS.    Now that we KNOW this is a server problem, that makes us one step closer to fixing this....

No. It seems this plugin does not work on the majority of shared web hosts.

Hello Everybody,
I am building my eshop with latest version of joomla and virtuemart and I have some issue with this plug-in.

I achieved to solve almost all of the issues mentioned above, but I still got this one:

When I try to buy a child product from dropdown list something goes wrong with stock control and neither the order's pdf is generated correctly nor the stock quantity is getting lower as it should be.
I tried all the combinations of stock availabilty of parent/child and i still get a blank screen without any error in the forwarded link:

QuoteThis information has been in the virtuemart wiki "Product custom fields with stock control" since day 1...

lol

yes but it still doesn `t work on the majority of shared hosting plans - and on the ones it does work on it appears to be extremely buggy judging by all the different errors being reporting in this thread alone

Hello,

If i do it on a other method, everything works, also with changing pictures when clicking a other child

But there is a problem, when i want to select from the drop down box, the box just dissapears.

When i click the box tab , hold my mouse for a moment and move the cursor a little bit, then the box stays opened.

Anyone knows how i can fix this?
Link to the product with the problem : http://cmalo.nl/testsite2/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=productdetails&virtuemart_product_id=57&virtuemart_category_id=38 (http://cmalo.nl/testsite2/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=productdetails&virtuemart_product_id=57&virtuemart_category_id=38)

Thanks alot

The only version of Virtuemart that I found which has this new method of Stockable Variant plug in is "2.0.3d".

Only in 2.0.3d version orders can manage products' stock control.

Even though the new method is a bit complicated, it has these 5 steps only:

-make a parent product,
-add a custom field selecting this plugin: "VM - Custom, stockable variants"
-add variants eg. color: red, black, blue and save

-now go to parent product,
-let the plug-in auto generate child products from parent's "custom fields" tab as described in previous posts

In my view software that only works some of the time depending on what type of host you use, meets the classic definition of "unstable".  I like my hosting service and share it with others.  They have commited to having a new server running php 5.3 within another month or so and I will try and migrate my site to that server while updating my site.  If I cannot get VM to work with my hosting compnay I will simply find another shopping cart software.

The whole custom fields feature is complex beyond belief and annoying to the extreme, and now there is the added variable that it seems to work (or not work at all) differently of different systems.  Is it time to throw the baby out with the bath water and start over?

I just made a discovery...

Hey corymp, don `t know if you are still following this, but I got exactly the same results - tried with 2 different hosting companies, the stockable variants plugin gave nothing but erros and grief - loaded the site locally & it worked (kind of)

using joomla 2.5.4 vm 2.0.4

***still not nearly as good as the VM 1.1 way
- cannot show the price in the dropdown,
- cannot have the parent as a template which cannot be ordered
-the name of the parent is given in the 'added to cart' popup message (eg 'ladder was added to cart'  instead of 'plastic ladder was added to cart'

(although parent is no longer added to the child dropdown, which is a step in the right direction - but it would be sooo nice if they had to choose a child BEFORE they could add to cart, like in VM 1.1)

- the child product names are showing up in the cart - but the prices are different in the cart than on the page?! (eg plastic ladder 65.61 + 6.07 tax in the cart, but on the page it is 50.40 + 4.66 tax)

all in all some signs of progress - if this was an early beta I would be quite encouraged - as it is the 4th 'stable' release, not so much

I guess the whole point is moot if I cannot get it to work anywhere but locally on my computer

I GOT IT TO WORK OMG!!!

http://www.likdancewear.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&view=productdetails&virtuemart_product_id=10&virtuemart_category_id=1

Now I just need to find a way to automate an import that sets the size and color to the parent. I can import parents and childs already. I am getting so close.

HG do you happen to use csvi for importing? If so, do you know how to setup a csv file to import like this automatically?

Can anyone confirm that this works correctly or is a bug?

Once I place the order, I login to admin and change the order status to confirmed. Then I check the inventory count and it stays the same. Then I went back to Orders and changed the status again to shipped. I checked my inventory and now I have MORE items then I started with - lol.

Is anyone else getting the same findings?

I can appreciate that... the whole beauty of virtuemart up until 2.0 is that you didn `t need to be a programmer to do simple things like add a child product.

In fact I would often show clients who could barely send email how to manage their entire shop in less than an hour.

It has now been several weeks for me, & I have yet to get a basic site working properly - and I `m not sure I`ve seen a vm 2.0 site that anyone has got working that works perfectly without any caveats.

This has been one of my major gripes with the redevelopment of VM to 2.0 - a new product should always enhance what was before, IMO the system needed to administer the shop now is far too developer led. By that I mean it is clear that someone highly skilled and technical has called the ultimate shots for usability rather than working out where the system needs improving and leaving the usability decisions to a more design and UI based developer who would usually step in before launch and say - wait a sec! This is not an improvement on the old version.

If I had any hair left, I would be tearing the remainder of it out trying to figure something as simple as > parent product either zero priced or a set 'base' price > each attribute price being set to what in VM1.1 terms would have been =£myprice but this version does not do that, it enforces +£myprice which is plain dumb.

Honestly, if I had not invested so much time into this new site, or had I still been running VM1.1 I would be considering using one of the other number of ecommerce programs on the market, even migrating to them at this stage is not possible as the developers of the rivals haven't coded migrators yet because the VM2 code is STILL changing too regularly.

I agree.  The development team seems to have lost touch with their user base, which is shop owners like myself or smaller web site developers who need a product that is ready to use (or almost so) right out of the box.  VM1.1 offered that and VM 2.0 does not even come close.  It is probably worth mentioning that the Joomla Extensions site no longer has Virtuemart listed and one of the select "Editor's Choice" extensions.  Unless some fixes are made the only "migration" will be from VM to some other e-commerce solution.  I and many others would really hate to do that.

When you guys add are viewing the page as a shopper and make a selection with the variants, does the page reload and utilize the inventory? For me, even though my variants have inventory counts, every selection states the product is out of stock and to click notify me when it comes back into stock.

Here is a screen shot of my parent item's custom field showing the stockable variants.

or pay me I'll login and do the fields for you...

Hello,

I have been struggling with this for about 7 or 8 hours now.  I am convinced something is wrong with the software, there has to be a glitch.

After I click custom fields while under the parent, and then click Custom Field Type, click save and go to the item, the option to match each child with the color/size does not appear.  Nothing happens!  I've tried more than one browser, clearing my cache, everything.  Can't get it to work.

Please help.

it may be your host

I have had the same problem, then I loaded the site locally & everything worked (sortof- there was weird things happening with priced changing in the cart etc, but that`s another story)

I use godaddy & greengeeks - tried both & it doesn `t work on either.

my advice before you spend tooo much more time on it - load the site locally & see if it works there, you may have to choose between trying to find a host it works on, or choosing a new ecommerce solution

Hello Guys,

I had a go at custom variants and child products and I don't think I am doing it right.

Here is what I did.  I have items ... its baby swaddling.  comes in a 4 pack.  There are different color sets.  There are different prices for each item.

1. I made a product ' Aden + Anais Baby Swadding ' Colorset Paparazzi added Price, Category, short desc, full desc, picture, put stock level at 10 items, then i made multiple children products of the different color sets each one using the same info from Paparazzi just cut and pasted but changing the Product name by adding the color set description.  Then i changed the short desc, and full desc to include the color set info.  I put in the different photo for each color set.  saved it all.

Then I made a custom field, chose plugin, chose stackable variant + cart attribute, added my different color sets.  saved and then went into my parent product and chose this custom field.

This is where the s__t its the fan.  Where do I go from here?  Did i do something wrong... I end up being able to choose my different variables, but they obviously don't link up to my children products.  How do i do that?

Why is this so confusing :).  Can someone please help.

Hello Guys,

I got a little problem with custom fields and taxes. I got products (spices) width different containers AND different Taxes.
When i create a product, i add different custom field with cart attributes (exemple : my product is "Black Salt from Hawaii" is available in 100g and 1Kg,100g=10€,1kg=90€).
The problem is in the front office : all the taxes of the shop (5.5% and 19.6%) are added to the custom fields (exemple : 100g X (19.6+5.5)% ....

Is it normal ?

I've followed these instructions, and have the appropriate attributes I want, have those children products with inventory in stock, and it only displays the "Notify Me" text, not the "add to cart."

I've got the product here: http://www.arizonatacgear.com/store/index.php/component/virtuemart/survival/survival-bracelet-plastic-side-release-detail?Itemid=0

This is the exact same problem a few of us have. When you make a selection, the page does not refresh to the appropriate child and update the stock. This is the exact reason why I changed to generic child variants with only 1 drop down. You could do the same and have two items. Orange Survival Bracelet,Plastic Side Release and Black Survival Bracelet,Plastic Side Release. Then allow the user to choose the size in the drop down.

Just thinking out loud really - have been playing with generic child variants as suggested by spyderwebdesign -

It has made it a long process but does eventually achieve most of what we want.  (The unfortunate thing with my client is that they stock every bra size from 30A up to 44J inclusive which is between 80-100 sizes depending on manufacturer!)

One addition I did make is to have the colours as a generic child variant of the product, and then the sizes as the generic child variants of each colour.  It makes quite heavy going to implement, but makes the dropdown boxes work quite nicely.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where we could feed a link to the parent from the children, so that we can go back to re-choose the colours?

Cheers!

Hello everyone,

I finally manage to make it work but i have a strange problem with the price.

The Parent item has price 20.00 €.
I'm adding additional price to child 50.00 € but when i click "Add To Cart" it adds the double.
So i have 120.00 € in my cart.

I'm attaching you a screenshot to understand better.

Why this is happening ? Does anyone facing the same problem ?

Thank you.

I'd appreciate it if anybody experiencing this problem could make the proposed change (simply commenting out a line) and let me know if you see any adverse side effects. I haven't noticed any myself.

Can we come to a consensus about the most important bugs in this plugin that need to be fixed. I'm going to put a bit of time into getting some of the bugs fixed and putting these bug fixes to the admins because development on this plugin has stopped.

What should get fixed first?

That looks like a corrupt installation to me. First thing to check is that the plugins are published. Go to the Joomla Plugin Manager and find the three plugins "Vm - Custom ......" and publish them. If that doesn't help, I guess a reinstall is necessary.

Also, make sure you've install the VirtueMart AIO part if they don't appear in the Plugin Manager. I can't remember whether these are part of the VM base or the AIO installer.

Hi folks,
So I have managed successfully to add custom variants to my parent product (size and colour), and overcame the issue of the pricing by going into each child and giving it a specific price...all seemed good, but then I noticed that all the children are visible!

There are ways of ensuring a person navigating the site will never see them by not associating them to a category and not using the page format which shows all the categories and the items within them. But they can still be crawled by Google et al. and so people can land on them via the search engines. It also means there are numerous duplicate pages, which on a large site may be perceived negatively from an SEO perspective.

I thought of redirecting the child pages to the parent page, but sh404SEF and Virtuemart don't like each other and so I have had to let Joomla handle the URLs instead of sh404SEF, and so I have no means to redirect them

Unpublishing the child removes it from the dropdown in the parent detail page, so that's not an option. So what could the solution be?! Anybody got any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your time and help.
Chris

...the issue of the pricing...

Which issue?

I think the problem with the child products showing up as duplicate products if you navigate to them manually is something which would need to be addressed in the core. I don't think the plugin has enough access to return a 404 error on a child product (I may be wrong).

I guess that if a child product doesn't have a category, it should possibly return a 404 in the core. However, there may be other functionality that requires this is not the case. It's worth taking up with the core developers.

I must be missing a step, in my attempt to configure the Plug-In the options just aren't there. Could this be a browser issue? I have attempted with both Firefox and Chrome to no avail.

I have located several step-by-step forums on how to add variants and child products but so far none have a fool-proof explanation that winds up working in the end. Bottom line is I have not seen a single variation (or my attempts to create variations) appear on the front-end of the store.

Here is what I need:
I want to add a T-shirt to the store with size and color variations. The t-shirt is available in black, white and grey in sizes Small through 3X-Large.
Ideally the t-shirt is just one item with children or variations (this language is tricky). I want shoppers to find the solo t-shirt and then choose the size/color they need when adding it to their cart.

is there a step-by-step process or instructions on how to do this?

Does virtuemart have a support line of some sort so I could talk with the source?

I greatly appreciate any insight and assistance you can provide me with.

Have you opened up the dropdown list and physically clicked on the "Available size and colour" option. It's a strange interface, because the default option in the dropdown list does nothing until you click on it.

Then the javascript should pull in the options that you've configured in the custom fields area.

As soon as it will be ready i will put it here http://www.mamochki.vl.ru/

And i have noticed that my children are visible and when i mark them unpublished - the sizes on the just disappear.
I made all children without any categories, but still they appear in the new products and best products.
The best variant for me is to show only parent product without duplicating (child products). But i have no idea how to do this  :-\

Price appears twice because the first one is the title for the "prices", and the second one is the individual price. there are multiple price display options. If I'm only displaying a single price type (no taxes, discounts or anything like that), then in the configuration I uncheck all of the price labels. This just leaves the first "Price".

The size is appearing twice because the first one is the title of your customfield and the second is the title of the individual option. You could change the title of the customfield to "Options" or "Choose" or something generic like that.

Alternatively, you can create a modified template and remove the unnecessary duplications.

Version 2.0.8 has now been released which means that the stockable cart variant is now at least usable.

Please be aware that the configuration for stock control now has an extra option. The option entitled "Do not Display Product, if child products also out of stock" behaves the way that 99% of people (and every other e-commerce system that I'm aware of) would expect "Do not Display Product" to behave.

If you want the the display of products to be dependent on the child products rather than the redundant parent product, use this new option instead.

Make sure that your child products are not assigned to a category. I believe this is what makes them available to searches and other modules.

Hi there,
I have yet to figure out how to make the child products active in the parent's dropdown as stockable variants, but inactive as individual products, as so do not have their own details pages. Not associating them to a category is not sufficient - they still appear on various listing pages within Virtuemart, and in search modules (AceSearch at least).

This really is a major flaw, as all these pages will be indexed by search engines, and so even if visitors cannot navigate to the pages on the site, they can land there.

Sorry, I realise I'm not contributing much to the conversation...if anyone finds a solution, please shout it from the virtual roof tops!

It seems that I was misinformed. The absence of a category on the child products simply removes them from the categories view.

I think I'm going to have to update the plugin to modify the search query and I think I'll need to create some new modules.

As for me I do not link my child products to any categories and still they can simply be seen on the main page of the site where the new added products are seen. And i do not know what to do with it.

I'm trying to show child's stock level in parent product details.

I work with a "VM Custom, stockable variants" plugin. In the parent product you can choose different child products with a drop down menu.
First try was to insert following code in the stockable.php

// Availability Stock Level
?><p></p><?php
$stato = "";
$statotip = "";
if ($field->child[$child_id]['in_stock'] < 1) {
$stato = "nostock";
$statotip = "Hurry! Very low items stock!";
} else {
if ($field->child[$child_id]['in_stock'] < 2) {
$stato = "lowstock";
$statotip = "Low items in stock!";
} else {
$stato = "normalstock";
$statotip = "Items in stock available!";
}
} ?>

<span class="vmicon vm2-<?php echo $stato ?>" title="<?php echo $statotip ?>"></span>
        <?php

Now I receive correct stock level of child products above category and product view, but no single stock level of the current chosen child within the parent view.

I'd welcome any help to get the result I wanted.

Thanks a lot,
Volker

hi there,

the variant plugin remains quite buggy, you really have to save each variant seperately before adding a new variant line. When you don't do this exactly as mentioned, i get an empty sub-product item (ghost item) which cannot be deleted anymore. In the main product list, the variant is listed as subproduct, but clicking on the subitems, gives an empty list. deleting the full product is imppossible. "VM error": cannot delete article variant)

please tell me there's a fix for this, i now have a few (sub)items in my list which are impossible to delete......

Well, that's a pity... and a bit complicated to fix when you don't have all the logical structure that is used by the Dev Team! But there is still hope  :D
BTW, I hope that multilingual will be well supported, like for the product title and description!

I have a few questions concerning this plug in:

I am running joomla! 2.5.6 and vmware 2.0.8e.

I am setting up a Pizzeria Take away / home delivery shop.

I have most of the stuff set up exept for two "small" things.
One,which pertains to this thread seems to be a bug with this plug in (or something stupid on my side;) )

As I would like the customer (shopper) to be able to choose different sizes and add extra ingredients like salami, prawns, bacon, extra cheese, etc I set up child products for each ingredient, gave them a price, stock (where is the unlimited stock checkbox??), no category.

I set up the plugin and added it to the custom fields. Everything seems to work expet for the fact that on the details page the product price gets changed from the base price to the price of my first child product (salami). I thought the child product price should be ADDED to the base price.

This is confounding and I have to deliver by monday.

Also how do I set up "--please select--" as the default?

Please any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers to all who have put their efforts into this :)

Edit: Oh I almost forgot an important "detail". How do I implement multiple choice (ctrl key or other)??

Why are you using a "stockable" cart variant when the one thing you don't want is stock control?

QuoteWhy are you using a "stockable" cart variant when the one thing you don't want is stock control?

Point taken.

I wanted to try it out and see if it "fits", I also was hoping it supported multiple choice..

I liked the idea of having a size and ingredient choice (drop down), but I noticed that I cannot set a supplement price to the sizes. so i dropped that idea.

I tried this:
http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=99678.300

But alas that does not allow for multiple choice either.
Neither do normal cart variants. :(

Great plugin though and I appreciate the hard work involved :)

Hello, here's a sample of a similar result I want for my website: http://www.blackopalbeauty.com/makeup/face/foundations/true-color-stick-foundation-spf8
I want to get a beauty online store done, and I like how this site allows for each product shade to be viewed with out too much fuss. Once each shade's thumbnail is clicked on, the drop down menu also switches to the active shade.
Each shade is shown as either available or out of stock according to shade clicked on. I gave up on stockable variant, now I use generic child variant.
Does anyone know how to do this?

testing out VM and wondering with the custom fields

is here anyway to get the fields multilingual?

On the other hand I might be stupid as usual and have missed something.

In all it seams to work ok but the field are only in one language in the drop down.

Hi,

I have finally after 2 days got the attributes working! However, I have a question.
We have something like 10 colours, and 4 sizes for over 30 products. Do I really have to go through and match up every colour with every size on EVERY product??

I use VM1 and Zen Cart and it is not this difficult to add multiple attributes to multiple products in the previous version or in the other package...?

At this stage all I really need is every product to  be assigned the same attributes, sizes and colours, stock control is desirable but not absolutely necessary.

Thank you in advance

However on the parent product or a child product if a variant is selected. Only the product displayed is added and not what was selected in the drop down.
e.g. if on the main jumper page a green jumper in a small size is selected. Instead of that being added to the cart Main Jumper is added instead.

If someone could help that would be great.

When a user select an option from the size drop down list, he got a product price modification correctly. But sometimes, when the user enter to the detail product page, it display the price from the last option of size list.

Try to enter this to this URL and refresh it with F5, at least 5 times.

WTF was VM thinking releasing this as STABLE. The first time I played with VM 1 I had a demo cart (With my own products, varients, shipping and payments) up and running in less than 3 hours.

I have put well over 40 hours (Thats a full work week) intro trying to get VM2 running (Today is my 3rd attempt since 2.0 was released) anywhere close to any VM1 shop I had done with no luck. VM team should be ashamed of themselves since are providing NO explanations, No insights, not even a comment on these issues that so many are having.

Well, my time with VM has come to a close, I will find an alternative with Joomla or find a 3rd party shop.

Thanks VM team! Way to destroy an awesome product and destroy your following.

HG , first may I commend you for spelling this out - finding VM2 step by steps is so hard - I need to control stock of "drop down sizes whatever"  I need to do this - Joomla 2.5 VM 2.0.18a

Womens Long Sleeve
Choose color , choose size - and track stock for blue sm, red large etc - you would think this would be cake , but I just cant get it -

Your step by step explains a product with an existing child - Do I need a child product for "women's long sleeve"" can you give me an example of what that would be? Now this link below , explains how to do this on product with no children but it doesn't work -

( ,http://www.flexiblewebdesign.com/blog/virtuemart-tutorial-product-custom-fields-with-stock-control-with-screenshots/#comment-5794 (http://www.flexiblewebdesign.com/blog/virtuemart-tutorial-product-custom-fields-with-stock-control-with-screenshots/#comment-5794)

but when i get to step 7 the sizes populate, but there is no  (box) like the screen shot on that page after the refresh?

Can you or anyone please help me in some broken down step by step to achieve that I want above?  Another example:

White Fluffy Matress: choices king , full/queen  - track stock on each - I can't understand why this is so involved? I'm on a deadline - so if anyone can chime in that would be great! Thank you so much!

Hi Openglobal and all others,

When using this I found a very strange thing happen. It seem like add-to-cart and quantity fields are rendered different ways if it's a normal product or if it's a "stockable variants" product. The add-to-cart button is added to the page in the file default_addtocart.php. However if you comment out the line adding this button (echo shopFunctionsF::getAddToCartButton($this->product->orderable);) the button disappears from all normal products but NOT from "stockable variant" products. And even more strange is the fact that if you look in the browsers code window it isn't there any more BUT IT APPEARS ANYWAY!!!! Strange or super strange?? Cleaning cach doesn't matter. Any ideas why????

I like to show the button depending on the user category who is viewing the page. And I find this very hard to do if it's rendered different ways depending on the kind of product as it always seem to appear if it's a "stockable variant " product. HEEEELP!

/ Patrick

HG

Im using Joomla 2.5.8
Virtuemart 1.0.18a (current latest)

Your instructions are true. ok.

But How can you just Add child products without specifying the "Additional charge" in the Custom Field of the parent after adding the child product. You have already specified the price of the child when you created it.
This is impossible to do for multiple shoppergroups.

Example:

ParentProduct

                             shopGroup1              shopGroup2         shopGroup3
child1                           €10                             €7                          €5
child2                           €20                             €15                        €10
child3                           €30                             €25                        €20

All child products are real stockable products.
Basically i just want to say child1 is a child product of ParentProduct. Show the prices which is specified for each shopGroup accordingly.

Is this possible??

Asked before but didn't get any reply, try again.

Why can't the "add to cart" button be removed when using stockable variants? Comment that part out in the php code but the button still appears. This only happens with stockable variants. With normal products the button disappears.

Appreciate some help here and this seem to be the only living thread for stockable variants.

HG do you find that when adding an option to cart, it only adds the last option product? but displays the correct option below the product name in the cart? I can add one of every item and each has the name and SKU of the last item in the dropdown list.

...each has the name and SKU of the last item in the dropdown list

Hello,

Does anyone find the solution about the problem above ?

Thank you!

Hi all,

Firstly thanks for all the work you are doing here..

I've built a site for a client - clothing everything is working perfectly EXCEPT when they add an item to the cart that has two variants e.g. colour =white size= One Size the actual text is displayed twice in the cart..

screenshot attached

Using latest version of VM and AIO 2.0.18

Hoping its an easy fix

I'm want to tell you how happy i am and i really appreciate all your work guys. But...
I just updated virtuemart from 2.0.18b to 2.0.20b hoping that all or at least some of the stockable variant problems where resolved. I have updated the AIO also. In 2.0.18 i manage to reach the conclusion that the plugin VM Custom Field with Stock Control is acting strange, some times adds a child, sometimes is not, depending on variables that i cannot imagine. I have tried all the option described in this post but i wasn't able to present to the client a proof of working stockabe.
Well, after update to 2.0.20b the problem is sort of solved: The plugin is not working at all now. I press "new", i get some lines with childs products, i'm unhappy about the options that i get there (once i have pressed "new" i can't change the stock, only the attribute and price of the child) but the problem (excuse the irony) is resolved promptly once i press "save": The childs are never saved!

Looks like i'm stuck to the NOTstockable variants in this shop.

A noobish question here: can I re-use same stockable variants on different parent products. In my case we sell handcrafted jewelery and accessories. Most of the times we want to offer the same types of necklaces with different types of jewellery hanging in them. So main product is the jewellery and the customer is offered a choice of different necklaces to go with the main product. These necklaces comes from the same stock. Is there a way to set up so that the stockable variants for necklaces are from the same stock even though they are choices under different main products (the different peices of jewellery).

Seems a bit cumbersome to have to set up new stockable variants under each product when it´s in fact are the same variants from the same stock.

Hope I got this so written so you understand it. Thank's for any help!

Found this thread while searching how to set up a product with inventory control for various options. I got the product set up but it shows the 'Notify Me' button in the category which a customer will think it is out of stock. If they do go to the details page AND select one of the Child products from the dropdown it will show the add to cart.

I ended up adding stock to the Parent so the 'Notify Me' would go away but then if the item is added using the add to cart from the category page no option is selected so that wont work.

Is there a solution to using this stockable variant in the store to track stock on individual Children and not drive customers batty trying to spend money? It seems it is very close to working and quite possible I am just doing something wrong but after long searching I am unable to find any help in setting it up properly.

I am not a coder but it seems like since this is so close it should be fairly simple to fix. In the category view if there are Children variants it should show a button to 'Select Options' rather than 'Add to Cart' or ' Notify Me' in the details page for the Parent the first option should be '-Select-'

These two things would make this useable or at least it seems like it would to me. I am going to pass this along to my developer to see if he can fix it as I have had enough but this functionality seems to be very basic, must have capability for an online store and I am baffled as to why it seems to have not been addressed in what otherwise seems to be a very capable platform.

Hey Guys,

I noticed theses Instructions are clearly marked : <<ALREADY HAVE AN ITEM WITH CHILDREN>>

I have tried adding an a Child Product to a Parent but not getting it...

I open a Product > Click Add Child Product > I manage to dd it but here is where the confusion comes in...

Looking at the List of Products it appears as though VM has added another parent and another Child Product...

Can someone please explain to me how to add a child product?
How does all this work in VM 2.0?
What are Child Products used for if nothing shows up in the Front end ?

Perhaps someone can help me here as I am stumped. I have done everything listed here, but my second and third option always appear as empty drop downs on the store front. In the backend the options are all there and I can assign them to the children accordingly. I made sure all items are in stock as well. Is there something I'm missing?

I have found this to be an issue also. IMO if the parent is not orderable (using the tickbox under the stockable plugin) it should ignore the stock level of the parent item IMO, until then I have found it simpler to just put loads in stock of the parent and use the real stock figures for child products only

Tuki, actually, a better option is the stockable plugin for controlling options IMO. It needs a bit more setting up in the backend but there are no page reloads when you choose a child product - something you do get with the generic plugin.

You do need to setup the child options in the plugin beforehand rather than add them ad-hoc when creating a child product which is annoying but still, it is simple to setup a new stockable child product in the backend of the parent in just a couple of boxes and clicks (although Milbo - could we get that text field for final price built into the stockable plugin please as child products that have a specific price need to then be edited again afterwards)

I want to start off by apologizing if I'm asking the same question that's probably been asked a million times.  I just cannot seem to find an answer, so I thought I would just ask myself and see if I can get an answer/solution faster than me searching for it.

I cannot get the sizes to list in order.  I have created all the child products correctly.  They all show on the website.  But the order of the sizes is all wrong.  I go to the parent product, re-organize them the way they should look in Custom Fields, click Save, and nothing changes.  The list is still out of order.

I thought that maybe the VirtuMart update would fix this problem, but it didn't.

Any suggestions?

I have a problem with the plugin - Custom field stockable variant

I have a parent with several children. Everything is set as it should, with stock, price, etc.. Everything looks as it should in the frontend but as soon as I try to put something in the cart, it will not appear in shopping cart. Instead, I get switched to the category pages.

Do I have a product with no options (child poducts), it works to add it to the cart.

Whats the problem?

Joomla 2.5.14
Virtuemart 2.0.22c

Thankful for every help i can get!

Quantity box works ok in the rest of the products.

Hello, I wanted to explain my problem, I am building a store selling downloadable products, such as MP3 or WAV, then, I have been testing various options, but the best at what I need I do not get to show the download links when performed payment. Now, the concept is as follows, in a web page pondria different products and each product, such as a song, set the option to download in WAV or MP3, with their prices, with the same product with different grades. I'm using "Digitoll DOWNLOAD" as plugin download. I put a picture of the concept, sorry for my English, Thanks! :)

Hi and thanks for a great walk through how to add different SKUs to different variations on the same product it really save me a lot of head scratching. What I am having trouble with though is adding different customer groups to the addon (the price addition is different to each product variant depending on which customer group the customer belongs to). Is there a way to do this?

I've downloaded VirtueMart V3.0 over the included Jommla Webinstaller.

Now i try the instructions to create sizes.

But i can't choose any plugin. It's empty. In a post is written that the "VM - custom, stockable variants" are installed with VM.

Why i have no plugins?

You would have found that stockable variants don't exist in VM3 - generic children is the similar field/type

except that generic child variant doesn't work correctly either...

http://elanvape.com/index.php/en/shop/liquids/eve-guava-generic-parent-detail

This is a generic child variant, which shows that it is out of stock, except that there are 19 in stock. This product has three child variants, each with 1, 6 and 12 in stock.

The product has a parent with zero stock, that is not orderable.

The children have stock of 1, 6 and 12.

As soon as you select any variant, the stock is shown as 19 (the sum of 1, 6 and 12) - which of course is not correct, because the child has its own stock (and the parent that is not orderable is therefore not out of stock)

So...although this sort of works, it lacks some obvious functions:
1. If the parent is not orderable then it cannot be out of stock - the parent should probably show the total stock.
2. Once a child variant is selected, the available stock of that variant should probably be shown.

Hi all,

I realise you are starting to discuss VM3 but I'm still on VM 2 using the Stockable Variants plugin (it's working really well for us) and I wondered if there is a way to show something like 'Please Select' before the customer chooses a size/colour - rather than going straight to a variant?
The reason fjor this is we are showing stock levels and if a customer lands on a page and the first variant is out of stock - they may just think all variants are out of stock, without checking the dropdown.

I've tried putting in text in the Default option, but nothing seemed to change.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

The vm custom fields plugins for size or color is perfectly done but, i want to change the style. Currently, it is in dropdown listing but i want to show in horizontal row. <span>
