Sounds like I may have a similar problem. If I use the PayPal checkout (click the paypal icon not the word "Checkout") it takes me to paypal to login. I login and complete the transaction but when I click the payment confirmation in paypal it redirects me back to "Shipping" on my virtuemart store. Then I have to click Next and Confirm again. Then the payment is processed.
