Hi, I just set up VirtueMart and have two pressing questions - how do I disallow registrations where the user is asked to enter his physical address, and how do I set up my site to allow ONLY electronic downloads?

You will require customers to enter a billing address fo payment purposes, and then set the shipping address to be the same as billing.
To remove references to shipping address on the cart page you could edit and override the file at /components/com_virtuemart/views/cart/tmpl/default_address.php eg to hide the output-shipto-display div.
You can remove any fields you do not require in the bill/ship-to address using the shopper fields list editor (under the configuration menu)
Setting the store for downloadable files is best accomplished using the shipment-for-virtual-products plugin https://extensions.virtuemart.net/checkout/shipments/shipment-for-virtual-products-detail
