Most likely a directory permissions or ownership issue.

You don't say how you are installing or what Joomla version, but if using the old Joomla 1.5 then see these:

I'm using joomla 2.5

and I have all my directories are writable.. that is the problem mate..

It's driving me insane... Because of that I cant update vm to fix some problems...

jenkinhill

You are doing the install using Joomla's extension manager? Just like doing a new install?

Is this with J2.5.4 with the new Joomla updater component?

Hi, I've got a upgrade problem to. (Joomla 2.5.4 VM 2.0.2) Trying  to upgrade to VM 2.0.6 doesn't work using the Joomla installer or the Virtuemart upgrade.
Also tried to use the Joomla tmp directory after reading http://forum.virtuemart.net/index.php?topic=101702.0
Tried changing the owner of all VM directories as well as setting the rights to various levels. Nothing seems to work.

When upgrading a tar file is put in the tmp directory (com_virtuemart.update.tar.gz)
When opening this file locally it is marked as corrupt and only contains the administrator files for com_virtuemart.
Mabye this helps somewhat for some searching for a solution.
I hope anybody can help.

Regards Richard

There is mention of another server lmitation affecting updating here: http://www.phoca.cz/documents/2-phoca-gallery-component/438-cannot-find-joomla-xml-setup-file

When trying to update from tmp are you unpacking the files first before uploading to the tmp directory?
